Great Analysis! but gone wrong
by Tejas on May 26, 2006 11:58 PM  Permalink

Well what does merit mean?In all wisdom you are doing a Phd from University of Virginia. At what cost you went there?Who are all the tax payers? The entire middle class is the one which forms the bulk of upper castes are the one.No poor dalit is expected or supposed to cough up Tax netihter the rich corrupt politicians need to pay tax.If my father paid tax with all honesty, does he not have right to have ask what his ward & furtre generation gets out of it?IF you feel thats not correct then probably books of Indian law need to be changed, otherwise keep quite & complete your Phd & publish a thesis on poverty of India! you are typical politician stuff.

Why do the young students protest?
by Sujai Karampuri on May 26, 2006 10:54 PM  Permalink

Why do we not prepare our kids to face the harsh realities that he would eventually face? The problem is with our primary education and parenting. The school texts and teachers teach and preach the glorified version of Indian history which had a great past. But he is not taught how we had a history of prolonged and systematic discrimination and persecution. All ills are hidden or compeletely ignored. The kid grows up not knowing what it means to be a Dalit and doesnt know any Dalits. Even if he does know one Dalit, he would know an IAS officers son who appears to be well off. So, when he realizes that such a thing called reservations-based-on-caste exists, he immediately sees himself as victim and this rich IAS officers son as profiteer. He gets infuriated because now it means that he may not get a seat into IIT while this rich IAS officers kid may very well enter in spite of scoring lower marks. He rationalizes that it is all a conspiracy by the Government of India and its politicians to discriminate him- and asks - why are they doing it to him? Only because he is from forward-class?

Reservation
by Ganesh Prasad Das on May 26, 2006 10:17 PM  Permalink

The old haggard people are not able to see reason. Let there be separate Institutions for SC, ST, or OBC, but there must be common competition for jobs like engineer, doctor, professor, manager or tecnical expert, no reservation for any sect.

Reservations.
by JGR on May 25, 2006 06:36 PM  Permalink

Our aim should be to pull up backward classes and not lower the platform, which is what reservation is doing. A merit student who is denied a seat because of his caste is bound to feel frustrated.

Do our institutes connect with the real India?
by dr amaresh on May 25, 2006 02:56 AM  Permalink

The two twains of poverty stricken deprived India and the academically obsessed and motivated coaching class fuelled India meet at only one place, the work place of the very doctors who are on strike

I pray to anyone to just sit with the medicos at any of the OPDs for just one day.Interact with our patients, and you shall realize what poverty, subjugation, ignorance and deprivement is all about. Every day, day in and day out, the young doctors in the country do not study disease, medicines, investigations and cure, they study poverty, ignorance, superstition, prejudice, bias , and yes, even caste. The experience is very sobering indeed.

The real India? Believe me, it is very unreal.
