yes, indian governemnt and the people of india should forgive ltte. if india totally believs in ghandian way for archiving peace then why india trained, supplied arms and amunitions to ltte to terrorize a legitimate governemnt? if india did not help ltte in the 80s, the ltte would have find an other way to get arms and amunition to fight the governemnt of srilanka.srilanka govt failed to address the tamil people's grieavances after 30 years of peacefull protests pushed the tamils to pick up arms.india helped to nurish arms struggle. it is time india forget the past and forgive tamils of ceylon who look india as their fatherland. the tamils of ceylon and the ltte never crossed india's interests in the last 15 years and the ltte will continue that policy. please be kind to us and lets us live with dignity!
we should accept the ltte apology in good sense. 'what we must do is to send a team of reputed parlimentarians of our country to the north-east srilanka' 'we should talk to the tamil people there and find out the real truth' 'we should frame a policy which gives the tamils a regional autonomy' 'we should invite mr.tamilselvan and mr.rajapakse to delhi for discussion regarding the policy' 'we can hope that this will bring lasting peace.....
LTTE was a creation of India, and it is a frankenstein gone out of control. When it suited, both Sri Lanka and India had a cosy relationship with LTTE. There are now no other Tamil rebel/opposition groups left.
LTTE is responsible for the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. No amount of apologising will change that.
The organization should be brought to book and preferably decimated. It is now a monster gone put of control.
We are all discussing this the wrong way - emotionally. The only relevant question is this: Is it in India's national interest to come to some kind of an accomodation with LTTE? The anwer is a no for the following reasons.
1. India should be seen as promoting democracy. LTTE has squelched all SL Tamil voices other than itself by a policy of terror and assasination. They are as far from democratic as can be.
2. It is in India's best interest to maintain good relations with Sri Lanka. Support for the LTTE would not further this cause.
3. It is in India's best interest to make sure the Sri Lankan Tamils get justice and are able to live as equal citizens of that state. A multi ethnic but unified Sri Lanka will validate and promote India's own multi ethnic character. LTTE is not willing to consider a unitary state solution, even if the Sri Lankan government agrees to constitutional guarantees for Tamil people's equality.
4. A break up of Sri Lanka may create instability that would not leave India untouched. The best way for India to ensure territorial integrity of Sri Lanka is by keeping the LTTE's power in check.
I am a Tamil myself, and am deeply offended that India wont defend the interests of Sri Lankan Tamils, because they are Tamils.
There were Gujjus being kicked out of Uganda, and Indians being kicked out of Fiji. I did not hear anything about India arming or helping them in any way, eventhough by your definition, they are "north indians".
The fact is that India has already done more than its share for the Sri Lankan Tamils. It continues to host them in TN. Support for LTTE is not the same as support for Tamils.
Further, SL Tamils are Sri Lankans, not Indians. Any help we offer them should be on moral and humanitarian grounds. Not political or ethnic grounds.
LTTE are not terrorist and they are freedom fighters fighting for tamil people. Its time for India to support for tamil people freedom. Their goal is to achive a seperate state what they call Eelam and they are half way, as they control 75% of Tamil Eelam. They run their own goverment, collect tax, run banks, schools, court, bus service etc its almost a country. They too have immigration office when you enter Eelam from Srilanka.
