10 things

5. Paranoia about maps:
I suppose the fact that Arunachal Pradesh shares lots of its borders with neighbouring countries justifies the fact why it's maps are publicly available. If you haven't forgotten, a few years back there was a rain of AK47s in West Bengal, very near to Arunachal pradesh, accidentally out of place, which were supposed to be for some other northeastern state where terrorism is being abetted by foreign (probably foreign religious ) forces. Moreover the maps available on Google earth don't show anything more than the terrain of India. They just show the rivers, water bodies, and mountains and mountain ranges. Noteven political boundaries. Also, the highest scale of map one could easily acess from any Survey of India is 1:10,000 and some maps people can easily buy from respective Survey of India office of that region. Ofcourse some are restricted maps b'se of security reasons.

10 things ...
by KL on Jun 23, 2006 10:16 PM  Permalink

Dear Author,
Nice column. It does point out many negative points about India. I would like to add some justification to the authors remarks about India.
First of all, the power cut. Ofcourse powercuts are too much in India. But, the reason why there wasn't any powercut in US during Newor Leans cyclones could be all the power cables run underground(which makes US developed and India not so DEVELOPED). We have experienced powercuts in some parts the UK for about 2/3 days because of HUGE rains and some people have to spend their nights in pubs to keep them warm with candles.Ofcourse the power supply cables are underground here too.
4. Discrimination against the white tourist:
Oh well! this happens even with auto rikshaws(very fondly called as "put puts". Perhaps these people are trying to get back all the wealth many other countries robbed from India.
I shall continue my response in another message.

Agree.
by Chyren on Jun 23, 2006 10:15 PM  Permalink

I completely agree with this article. I would say he came up with only 10 but I can tell more than 10 for sure. Rather than disagreeing with this, I would say try to work on each of them and make India the best place in the world. This is the best article I have ever seen which can tell us what we are lacking and where we need to improve. Everybody knows where we are lacking but nobody wants to comment on it. I really appreciate author's effort for coming up with this.

overcharging of foreign tourists
by Ramdas Iyer on Jun 23, 2006 10:10 PM  Permalink

I understand that this could be interpreted as racism but are'nt these wonders our property? They belong to India and the Indians. I mean I wouldnt have to pay for food at home since I have already paid for it in other ways. Similarly we Indians have already in one way or the other paid for construction of places like the Taj, sometimes with their lives. The French didnt contribute much towars constructing the Taj, monetarily or otherwise did they. Hence the difference.

come up with better solutions to improve india rather hating india / indian culture
by friend4all_007 on Jun 23, 2006 10:10 PM  Permalink

Dear friend

I don't deny that all the points mentioned by you about india is completely wrong, now tell us what do we indians do for the following factors affecting day to day :

a) huge indian population to be fed and huge indian population need to be employed in some units.
b) huge rail / road traffic to be handled
c) no proper adoption of technology for the optimal electricity usage.
d) huge consumption of organic fuel like petrol, diesel, kerosene and natural gas
e) different communities needs to be lived and worked together, so brotherhood needs to be a part of an indian life
f) foreigners in india are given atmost protection and priority in terms of law and order by the indian govt.

For your information, there is nothing good about western coutries, as there are no proper natural environment. Added there is no unity among the people in western country.

There is one real good thing that western countries have and worth adopting is in-born individual and corporate responsibility to their country which is very difficult to find in india except for very few, the day we indians learn that we are top.

Don't Agree
by Nitin Agrawal on Jun 23, 2006 09:21 PM  Permalink

Hi,

I am not satisfied with the point you made that we charge diffreent rates for the white tourists and you don't find that anywhere in the world.

I am studying in london, the fees for a local national or anyone from EU country is 1/10th of the fees paid by an ASIAN student. What do you have to say for that ?

hmmmm
by Swetha on Jun 23, 2006 09:20 PM  Permalink

I do not agree with certain thoughts of yours! Like if a foreign tourister has to shell out more than normal to see the Taj Mahal, then it is! Well, after all, it is a preserved monument of that nation that they have come to see, right? Or, ask foreign countries to let the Non-resident students pay the same fees as Resident & not five times as much!!!! Can we term that some kind of discrimination????

Also, if the Louvre lets ppl take pics, then let it! We have certain rules. Rules of other nations need not always be the right ones!

10 things I hate India
by sudhir on Jun 23, 2006 08:41 PM  Permalink

Thanks for your concern. Even illeterate know these problems. What are the causes of Babudom, corruption and neglect. Go back to 1942, when Gandhijee gave a call for Quit India Movement, majority of "DESHBHAKT" quit ICS and government jobs. Only those continue their jobs who did not want the removal of British Raj. These bureaucrats continued to function in British style and bacame the backbone of Indian babudom. They were told by the British lord to create anarchy in the country. Thus the present India is what they gave direction to us. It was not Nehru running Indian government, It was pro-British ICS turned IAS lobby responsible for your most 10 hates.
These days IAS officers/Engineers/docotors who are the backbone of bureaucracies/class I professions belong to or hail from poor semi rural-urban background as well. That is why India is shaping in different form after 57 years.
