''socially elite''
by earl on Jun 11, 2006 12:50 PM  Permalink

"you will be a miserable misfit in the intellectually and socially elite IIT atmosphere. "
It is inflated ego or lack of self respect. What does he mean by socially elite ? Does it mean that only rich and elite class apply. I am in the US, and I have never seen any American University or any American cooperation telling people who are not socially elite will be misfit here. This shows that M S Gopinathan has not come out of this feudalistic mindset.

Wrongly Targeted Advice
by devadas on Jun 11, 2006 08:00 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

You should advice the Upper Castes to atone for the most humiliating discrimination heaped on the lower castes for several millenia.
Asking the OBCs to throw away the crutches is like asking a handicapped person to throw away his wheel chair!OBCs have to run much faster than the Upper caste members to keep in pace with them(Upper castes)as, at every stage they face discrimination from the Upper caste mafiosi.

Throw away the demeaning crutches offered ?
by vikadakavi on Jun 11, 2006 03:07 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I am glad that people are now suddenly empathised
about the lack of schools in villages. Lets first
do that and empower the uneducated, and THEN the
crutches will not be needed.

Your reference to "Canada does not ask me my caste
etc" only goes to show your simplistic view of the
Indian situation. India is filled with middle-class
mindset, that just does not want to address the
complicated problem of caste-system, but is very
much interested in hiding it by wishing that the
govt did not ask for their caste. Your article
seem to share the same mindset.

I do not understand the relationship between caste system and reservation in govt. jobs. If somebody ill-treats somebody on the basis of caste, it should be made a punishable offence. He should be punished according to law. But why reservation in jobs ?

It is surprising that people from so called backward castes are still not accepting the exhortions to avail all the educational benefits from govt. and compete in general category. Perhaps they have become used to charity and do not want the charity to go away. Initially the framers of constitution had kept the provision for 10 years based on need, but now it has turned into greed.

It is also saddening to see these people referring to themselves as people from lower castes repeatedly. There are different castes. Why some self respecting person should tell himself that I am from a lower caste ?

Throw away the demeaning crutches offered ?
by vikadakavi on Jun 11, 2006 03:05 AM  Permalink

You say "They[OBCs] should throw away the demeaning
crutches offered" after having won a lottery
in your childhood days (in the form of a great science
teacher who ignited your interest) You
mention about the fortunate circumstances and
influences that had paved your success.

Ignition can happen anytime in school(even after
12th std), for students who were just
below the cream (We can look at the improvement
exams). And these students are not brain-dead
and they can indeed catch up, if given an opportunity.

I think we should not believe in lottery/luck, but
should believe in systematic support from the State
(which is termed as crutches) I dont dispute the
question of where to draw the line (what % of
reservations would be disastrous etc) and I am aware
of the problems with reservations. But you don't
seem to be addressing the size/nature of the crutch,
but you want everyone to throw them away! You must
be kidding. Wait, no. You have the support of
atleast 200 elites in rediff. You must be correct.

Reservations necessary sometimes
by Edge on Jun 10, 2006 11:30 PM  Permalink

Well I am not a glaring advocate of reservation, but I do strongly believe in extending help to socially and economically bckward. If this were not the case by virtue of superiority and dominance the western countries could capture most of the third world countries and enslave them. Imagine if India continued to be enslaved by British instead of getting freedom. We would still be backward(probably??) and not many Indians would have got an opportunity to reach their zenith in their career and life. In short Western nations are reserving land and resources for the underdeveloped nations and let them grow at their pace. This same reasoning extends to reservation policies in India. Socially and economically backward people cannot grow without reservations. Prof Gopinathan's view that using crutches and charity is below dignity is irrational for the same reason that third world and weak countries are let live by stronger nations. I do maintain that reservations at the premier institutions like IITs are hinderance to maintaining them as centers of execellence and learning. With so many engineering and medical colleges around these premier institutions should be spared.
