Good One
by Ravi Prasadu on Jun 09, 2006 02:01 PM  Permalink

This article is really well written bringing out the disadvantages of reservations in professional courses. Hope somebody(Who makes the decisions) takes note of this and address before implementing. We should get the views on this article of concerned ministers and UPA members who are forcing the reservations.

OBC reservation.
by SV Ramani on Jun 09, 2006 02:01 PM  Permalink

The Nation has been taken to ransom by these petty politicians who are harbouring caste based politics only for their personal vote gain.

The nation requires a egalitarian society without any caste, creed, religion or linguistics barriers. This can be brought about only be imparting quality education at grass root level.

Crores and croes of public money is wasted for various frivolous work. India is considered a Knowledge capital of the world. Many important world beating leaders have emerged from India merely on their shear strength without any GOvt. Support. How has this been possible? Purely on their inherent strength. The so many small and medium IT, BT companies that have emerged on the international scene not to speak of Infosys, Wipro, Satyam, all home grown biggies in the knowledge spheres have comes up on their own. They have immensely contributed to the Brand India image, not to speak of the enormous employment and revenue generation in foreign exchange to the nation and payment of corporate tax to the Govt hav significatnly contributed to the nation's progress. Did any of them think in their company of any OBC/ST or SC. All they counted was only MERIT, MERIT ...

Caste name to be removed from individual name
by Venu K on Jun 09, 2006 02:00 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

A good one. I too is an OBC but even when I have not availed the OBC reservation for my job, some of my friends (painful to talk about caste - who belong to forward caste) feel that I have got job on OBC quota. In fact many of then does not know that OBC reservation in jobs started may be few years back. THe worst thing is some of the people who never performed better then me in the acadamic side - the yardstick on which merit is measured - feel that I got seat because of being an OBC - when the fact is that I have not availed my OBC card.

I fully agree that we does not have to use OBC clutches. But if this country has improve and not to be misused by the politicans - it is time for the so called forward caste in particular and for everyone to shead the caste identity.

Forward caste should stop using the caste as a social status. First thing what they can do is to remove the caste name from the individual name.

Unfortunetly the quota system is all the time created in this country by the forward caste MPs ( please remember that at any time till now the majority of the MP's are from the forward caste) to see that they get elected by politically missing using their power.

what should OBCs do?
by Susheel Shabnam Bhat on Jun 09, 2006 01:59 PM  Permalink

Brilliantly put!

I feel uneasy in saying that I am from a so called upper cast but this I needed to mention just to emphasis my point that the OBCs can very well excel and outplay the upper classes if provided with the same playing fields and coaching at a primary stage during their primary education.

I am saying this as I have come across many of them like the proffesor who wrote this excellent guest column with a brilliant understanding and self confidence.

Thank you professor.

We all wish India well and it is possible only when all the OBCs are like you and capable of thinking the way you do and certainly not the way b..... Arjun Singh does.

thought provoking article
by sgp on Jun 09, 2006 01:57 PM  Permalink

This should easily get into the hall of fame of some of the best articles that have got onto rediff. A exemplary example of what a person who has the drive to succeed can do and at the same time, not taking sustenance from the caste driven reservation culture that Indian politicans have created and nurtured for votes.

I strongly agree with the writer and urge the teeming millions who fall into the OBC/SC/ST category that was hitherto created by our politicans to refuse this atrocious attempt to further divide Indian society to fight back and say with pride that they will do without reservation.

I am a kannada bramhin and quite unbiased in nature. Let us all give a clarion call to our politicans to foster competitiveness rather than this terrible idea of caste driven reservation.

Are you serios???
by Tanmoy Bhattacharya on Jun 09, 2006 01:57 PM  Permalink

"The SC/ST, OBC, BC and FC all having their own IITs with 100 per cent reservation, not only for students, but for faculty and staff too (why stop at students?). Maybe we could thus have healthy academic caste wars. Each group on its own racetrack." ---

Sir, are you serious? This may cause a civil war given the present political scenario in our great Democratic Nation.

Right Message..
by Tom George on Jun 09, 2006 01:55 PM  Permalink

Prof. M.S. Has a point there. The government has raised a issue which could burn for a long time to come.

There are concerns over the said OBC's and SC/ST's. The goverment should check whether people are really the down-trodden. In a generation where caste certificates can be purchased for as less as Rs 10000/-;there wont be any limits as to what people will do for getting education at a premier institute or for a lesser fee. Nobody in the right senses would oppose a move which would be benificial for the lower castes. But rampent corruption in Departments have seen worthy candidates fall out of colleges/higher education by such means.

Relaxation if any is to be made it should be only on the fees and that too at a acceptable level. There should not be any discrimnation made at the percentage/marks level.

Other wise the brain drain seen in early 2000 would be revisited.
