Untouchability in the first place was linked to hygeine and those wo wer in uncleanand were kept away . Since the society exploited the weaker section engaged in unclean jobs and allowed them no time to keep themselvs clean and no leisure and treatd them animals , untouchabilty stuck to the name of the job and the families who had to engage in tem by v ofrce of circumastances ,So it has come to stay in the mind of of he people . But those who are neat and clean and are not know to belong to any particular caste do ar not treated as untouchables ny where . but if his caste comes to be know , thoug his not treated openly as an untouchable , an aversion is lokely to be prsent in theminds and behaviour of the people . so caste should be readicated for all purposes. the socially backward and economically poor shouldb treated alike and special fecilities should be provided to them for improvig their abilities and potetntials . So also he people of the underprevileged class classshould be provided with adequate training to keep theselvs and thier surroundings clean and shoukld be provided sufficient funds to improve their the quality of work with adequat emodern equipments. No reservation
This article brings to my mind the phrase "an overeducated idiot"
Reservation is wrong because it explicitly kills the idea of merit and fair play and indirectly retards growth
The authors's idea that the resources to implement his ideas will appear magically is outright stupid.
The author as usual mixes up class with caste, and appeals to emotions to make up the lack of critical thinking. Sure upper castes do not allow lower caste servants to share the table for dinner, but then irrespective of caste WHO DOES? Even in a place with dignity of labor abd highly paid servants, such as the US, w does ANYONE invite their maid to dinner?
Our personal life should not be the governments business, if it does not harm anyone -- if a Brahmin cleans vessels a second time, who does it harm other than the Brahmin, who does extra work (and the vessels which get worn out faster)
This is not to say that all his points are unsound -- it is just that many of them ARE ALREADY official policy (and others were in the past) By the authors logic India should have 100% literacy)
It is a very nice article, throwing new prespective on the issue. The suggestions given by the author, have to be implemented for a better tomorrow. I especially liked the concrete ideas put forth, by the author, for solving the caste problem in our society. I am definetly for it and willing to pay for it, for I want to live in a better India.
I have read your article on For reservation, without reservation in rediff.com dated 25 July 2005 and this might be one of those several mails you get appreciating your article. But, I would like to make a > point that rather than just on paper how can this be > really implemented. I understand this article talks > about the ground reality and the way the society in > Indian is today. I really appreciate your thoughts on > the topic and the steps to be implemented. But, I > wonder why these thoughts remain only on paper. why > dont the leaders, people in power think of such a way > to make it a better place to live in ? I can > understand that people in power would think of their > own goals and would hardly do anything for improvement > on this. But, it is disappointing to see these leaders > from these reserved classes not working on this. > > There are some Indians like you and me who think in > this manner, but there are educated Indians (old and > young) who are still sticking to old principles of > caste/creed etc even to this day. I am making this > point on my experience and being an educated software > professional, I have been around meeting ma
I dont know if Prof. Pradeep would be reading my comment but let me give it a try. This article is different from the others, there is an attempt to try a solution to the problem. But with this solution comes another problem. "How would you determine the so called RESERVED or MARGINALISED candidates" as there is no proper way to differentiate a if someone is financially stable or unstable. If you consider them on the basis of Income there are still loopholes in the way they function. Regarding the 8th point, if you remember, the reservations were started with the same thought that they will be removed somethime in future but never happened, this could again be a repeat of the same situation we are in now.
I love your column in rediff.com about reservation. You have explained really excellant details and ideas to throw away the devil of castism which is playing a bad business with Indian economy filled with never dieing corruption.
You are great ! in explaining the truth .Yes, it is true that in the Talents world they should not be any reservation.Even he is the person who cleans toilets or Brahmin sons .Who has a talent will win the life .Who works hard will win the world . No blady Castism and nothing instead they can apply your ideas for the welfare of the needy people I repeat not low caste or high caste but governament should identify the needy people and for this they should assign a very good candidates who are very patriotic and love the nation welfare but not blady their own community people , Language, Region .
I would also like to have chance to tell you some very great findings I understood in France since I had stayed for 6 years .I am basically so called Brahmin in Indain society but for the world I am just a Indian from India .But never bother about my caste but I care for my identity as INDIAN.
Very true analysis of the situation. I hope that govt of India understands this and take appropriate steps that unite the people instead of taking steps of blindly implementing the reservation policy for votes that further divides the country. Solution can be found only through a long term policy as given in the article, not through currently implemented reservation policy and never through proposed OBC quota policy.
