hardly touching the earnings of only one minister
by chetan vadher on Jul 22, 2006 04:10 PM  Permalink

180 Cror between 3 lakh baggers is not a big ammount if compared to the earning of only one Minister. If Ministers collaborate with baggers they can really bring revolution to the Indian economy.

What's the big deal?
by Anand on Jul 20, 2006 09:05 AM  Permalink

Rs. 180 crore shared by three lakh beggars works out to Rs. 6,000/- per annum per beggar. The headlines insinuate that the beggars make a tidy sum. There have been lot of people who have been displaced from disaster zones like Bhuj, Latur, etc., who have been forced to live a life of begging. Let's not ostracise them further.

This creates some wrong picture
by Samazdar on Jul 20, 2006 08:46 AM  Permalink

This create some wrong picture, if you divide 180 crore by 3 lakhs then on an average per beggars it comes to 6000 per annum. Definately we have to look forward to reduce the increasing number of beggars by providing them more working solutions [I dont know how and what].

But on first look - Mumbai beggars earn Rs 180 crore news, portraits some different picture.

In Perspective
by Monsoons on Jul 20, 2006 12:15 AM  Permalink

Interesting statistic, but lets look at that in persepective. 3 lac beggars earning Rs 180 crore implies that on average one beggar earns less than Rs. 17 a day. Could buy him a loaf of bread, but probably not 3 meals a day. Would it be different if Govt. introduced VAT (top of the range goods) and Social Security and perhaps even made it obligatory for corporates/ FIIs to increase their social responsibility spend. After all the international businesses operating in India repatriate huge dividends adding significantly to their global shareholder wealth. Infact, instead of making it obligatory for the corporates, the govt could implent a social scorecard mechanism whereby the corporate could win more business govt/private tenders depending on their score. All other things being equal, the higher the social score, the better the chances for a corporate to win more business. Poverty alleviation ?

Mumbai beggars earn Rs 180 cr?
by labrea on Jul 19, 2006 11:06 PM  Permalink

Really? Who's been checking their 'collections'? Such rampant begging is symtomatic of a failed society and worse, massive govt failure! Indians have historically seen begging as acceptable - for the destitute, the result of Karma and for those wanting a chance for a better next-life on the cheap, by giving alms, and so they've never bothered to create social institutions like those in the West - 'poor houses'and charities etc., to take care of the needy, on a large scale. It's high time the denigrating practice of begging was outlawed - people should give to reputable charities instead of to beggars, as it only encourages this despicable practice. If destitute and desperate people know definitely there are places they can go which will provide them support, they will not have to beg. And forget govt - they're useless!
