a very positive sign.
by prashant sharma on Dec 22, 2006 04:32 PM  Permalink

all of us must congratulate the new chief justice. He must have overcome substantial biases throughout his career.

And let us not belittle his achievement by over emphasising the fact that he is a dalit.

This is a very positive development, and only through such things can we beat greedy and divisive politicians like Arjun Singh and VP Singh who want to exploit us on the basis of caste.

Wrong head line
by Vikas Saxena on Dec 22, 2006 04:27 PM  Permalink

This kind of head lines which make our society what it is today. No matter how able justice Balakrishnan is, the head line read \" first dalit CJI\", as if though he has CJI only because he is a dalit.
I didn\'t expect such mentions from a responcible media like rediff.

Justice Balakrishnan - New CJI
by Ravindra on Dec 22, 2006 04:24 PM  Permalink

Let us all congrate Mr. Balakrishnan.. However, Media should refrain from this DALIT word.. let Mr. Balakrishnan be the CJI only. it is not required to add "FIRST DALIT". It is just because of irresponsible media that the divide is getting deeper and deeper. If media could restrict and censor itself, I donot think, there is any divide.

i fully agree to Joseph, We need to address these issues upfront, there is no point pretending it away.
The dalits are still being victimized all over the country, we do not get to hear even 10% of the news. We living in cities think all is well. Even in government organizations, i still see the dalits being given a raw deal.

Media play a vital role all over the world. Each and every citizen are seeking this new. Our kind request not to seperate caste for the high profile like a Hon'ble Chief Just of India. We have to eliminate caste creed with out younger generation. Avoid to put caste on Media.

Dear Shriram,

The divide wont fill up just by ceasing from making references. Let a Dalit's achievement be highlighted, so that it works as a motivation for others. then a time can come when the President, Prime Minister, CJI all are Dalits but it wont be news. The divide will disappear without our conscious efforts.

Why emphasise so much on Justice Balakrishnan being a Dalit? Should the emphasis not be on his capabilities and qualifications first and then as a Dalit? I am sure he has not been elevated to the top post just because he is a dalit.

I totally disagree to the point that extraordinary emphasis is laid on the word "dalit". Everything is dependent on our perception only....

If we are going in deep the articles clearly defines the social conditions that existed in Kerala at then age and the hurdles that great man cleared in acheiving this post...

Projecting his caste shall necessarily be not the intention of the auther.. On the other hand inspite of all odds this news will provoke young generation to think in the line of only hardwork and commitment which will add value in nation developing process..
