We were for once right
by Ranjeev Mishra on Dec 07, 2006 01:20 AM  Permalink

Yes we were right other wise we had a nulcear state on both sides. Bangladesh needs to be cajoled/forced into being more benign. We should engage them, repeatedly expressing our tough stance on their anti-India activities. If US can influence the formation of a favourable govt at strategic places and we cannot, it's our problem not Bangaladesh's! We should ask ourselves the question if our deeds after the Bangla liberation had any bit of far sightedness?

It was a useless mission.Bangladeshi's love Pakisthan inspite of them looting and killing millions. They claim that India is not fair to them , but they have conviniently forgotten the help they got from India.

Yes it was the absolutely right thing to do and more needs to be done.

If you look carefully at the map of Bangladesh, There are two salients which protrude into India.

Salient A: Which consist of the northern portion of RajShahi comprising of the towns of Dinapur, Saidpur and Rangpur

Salient B: Which is to the East of the Indian state of Tripura which comprise of mostly the Chittagong Hill tracts.

If Bangladeshis continues to infiltrate into India and harbour the ISI and act inimically.
Then, the Indian army can act like a pair of Scissors and go Snip-Snip across these two Salients and incorporate them into India in a lightning week-long operation. This operation will a)Widen India's link to the Eastern states and b) give us the port of Chittagong which can serve as a submarine base and port.

All Illegal Bangladeshis can then be deported to Salient A. Which can be made into one of India's Special Economic Zones. Here we will make all those illegals work 24X7

Salient B which is predeominantly Buddhist will be
give us the port of Chittagong and a pressure point on
neighbouring Burma.

Now does the political leadership in New Delhi have the will to do this ?

No. Unfortunately, no one thinks in geopolitical terms.

Bangla Desh
by Pradeep Datar on Dec 06, 2006 09:09 PM  Permalink

I still feel India has made mistake in involving in the inner fights between East Pakistan(now Bangla Desh) & Pakistan. We have made a permanent enemy in Pakistan & their inflamating Kashmir issue is a direct consequence of this. Not that Pakistan was a great friend of India, but it had not dared proxy War on India. Now, with the splitting of Bangla Deash, all their actions in the form of supporting Terrorism is getting sanctity from the people of Pakistan.

As a child, I remember having paid Bangla Desh tax, in every walk of my life. A Bus ticket which costed 7 ps. was paid at 10 ps. This additional 3 ps. being towards Bangla Desh. This is the price every Iindian has paid, & what more BAngla Desh has no realisation of this & they are simply not bothered about this.

Can any BAngla Deshi leader worth his stature explain this. Can they anytime feel indebted with India ? Do they even know that a common man in India has supported thier existence?

Did we do the right thing?
by H Rajagopal on Dec 06, 2006 08:21 PM  Permalink

For once our political leadership let the military plan and succeed in the liberation of
Bangladesh. But unfortunately what the military gained in the battle field, Indira our PM then
lost during the infamous Simla Agreement. We had the wonderful opportunity to
settle Kashmir and establish a friendly neighbour in Bangladesh. We lost it all. The
Idiotic Radcliff Award, the zigzag line which divided West and East Bengal could have been re- drawn and a saner boundry could have been established. We did not heed to the request of
Mujibur Rahman to keep our armed forces in Bagladesh to eliminate all the anti-Bangladesh elements.
We were at a position of great advantage with 98000 Pakistani POWS with us. But
as a result of the misplaced magnanimity of Indira we are still paying the price in terms of
casualties in the East and in Kashmir.
Nehru and his progeny have caused great damage to this country. The present off shoot of the same dynasty is bent upon dividing the country by breinging in reservation for Minorities in every walk of life which will pave way for yet another call for Nation within Nation.

Did we do the right thing
by BNG on Dec 06, 2006 08:12 PM  Permalink

It was the call of the situation. But nobody expected that the influx will continue or increase. It is not only the borders but the whole country right in the capital that lot of Bangladeshi are living in slums. It was a mistake on the part of India that it did not avail the opportunity of bargaing Kashmir over the 93000 POW. It was of course another issue of feeding them with all thier security, salary and perks attached with their ranks.....

Did we do right thing
by Anchoori Mallaiah on Dec 06, 2006 07:54 PM  Permalink

Yes,we did the right thing in case of the liberation of the erstwhile East Pakistan from the clutches of Pakistan and its emergence as a separate nation. Our former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was quite right in her decision. But for her bold and timely action,we would not have had, atleast, this much of peace in regard to neighbourhood- we would not have had the buzzing sound of the Pakistan military planes hovering above in the Indian territory. That was the need of the hour and she rose to the occasion. The present problems/ issues with the Bangla Desh should not be linked to that and need to be sorted out separately from diplomatic angle.I think, except for minor issues,India will not have any major problem with Bangla Desh.

were we right
by dipak goyal on Dec 06, 2006 06:01 PM  Permalink

Any action can be decided as right or wrong depending on the situation at the time the action was taken.

The good points forcasted at that time were:

1. Divided Pakistan is weaker than united one.

2. The war was anyway inevitable.

3. The liberated Bangladesh would be a good neighbour.

As of now, the only benefit we are enjoying is that Bangladesh being a separate nation is a non-nuclear nation. The border is not good, but not as fiery as that of Pak.

However it is a proved fact that after Pak border being tightly sealed, major Pak activities against India are done in Bang soil, that too with latter's help.

It can be said as our misfortune that Bang has forgotten the genocide that Pak created in their country, and proving themselves to be the most ungrateful nation of the world.
