I agree partially...your blood doesn't decide your identity...it's actually your environment that makes you who you are...whatever Sunita Williams has accomplished has been because of her being an american. But i disagree with the point that Kalpana Chawla's achievments should'nt make a true indian proud...chawla was essentially 'Made in India'. She has been raised in Karnal in a completely indian environment. Hence Chawla's success is yet another medal of honour for India.
I fully agree with Mr. Abhilash's view point. There is no point in calling people Indian Americans or Indian Britisher or Indian French. Once a person has left the shores of India whether voluntarily or involuntarily or by choice or by threat, and has given up his or her citizenship, we have no moral obligation to look up to her as an Indian. She or he is no more an Indian and we have to talk about her in terms of being an American citizen. The buck stops that at. We should not bother ourselves with such small petty things.
It is high time we take up more serious matters and people who are Indians by birth and Indian at heart who are doing a yeoman service by doing selfless service. This should inspire Indians and not someone who has given up their Indian citizenship voluntarily for their personal needs and expecting others to follow suit.
I do not understand why the media is somuch hyping the travel of Sunita Williams to the space ! Is this the way indians find gratification in participating high-end space programs ? Cheap stuff !
Sunita is not an Indian. Just that she is of Indian Origin. If you start taking pride in such aspects, we may end up taking pride in everyone's achivements everywhere, as we all are descendants of human life in Africa !
I was stunned to see the front page article in TOI too. Kalpana Chawla was a US citizen by choice, and Anita is a US Citizen by birth. They both do not represent common indian women, to take pride ! They are american citizens, and they are Americans !
Please stop this cheap gratification for the masses. There is nothing in these which makes a true indian proud !
