Professor Eswra Warrier - an unfortunate father
by UG Sankar on Apr 25, 2006 12:04 PM  Permalink

Everybody knows about the Rajan episode and I am not going into details. I can very well understand mental trauma Prof Warrier and his family members had undergone when Rajan was found missing from the Police custody. For long 30 years or so he fought a lone battle to know the truth behind his only son's disappearance. Malayalis, including me, shold hang our head in shame as we did not fight along with him. No poltical party or any other organisation offered any serious help. GOD is great. HE will definitely punish the guity.

Dictatorship in democracy
by Prash on Apr 25, 2006 02:17 AM  Permalink

Totalitarianism is practiced with a difference in India. Here we operate with in the democratic framework to create political monsters, who then control executive machinery like the police apart from judiciary to exercise total dictatorship. It is a shame that they can undermine the facets of an open society and influence the media powers to obliterate the rights of a citizen.

Though Karunakaran was forced to resign having to own some responsibility for the incident, there are lots of questions about his arrest and eventual death that are hazy. Who ordered the arrest and torture are still being debated and apart from handing out punishments to the policemen who carried out the order, none of the political bigwigs who could have been involved walked away with minimal impact to their lives or careers.

It is strange and callous that even in a literate state like kerala, were every one is politically conscious , events like that these happened and true justice was never served. This incident some how ( mostly through the efforts of Mr. warrier) gained some publicity, but there are so many political murders that are committed with out any fear of backlash.

Heroes
by Ved Vedamanikam on Apr 25, 2006 12:22 AM  Permalink

Rajeev:

As usual you hit the nail on the head.

As a nation we do not have a clear sense of history. Nobel Laurate V. S. Naipaul in his book "India, A Wounded Civilization" states that Indians lack a healthy racial identity.

I am not suggesting for a bit that we become racists. However, having a healthy racial identity or self-image as well as to be a little more assertive (the right amount of aggressiveness blended with courtesy and diplomacy), be it in the sports field, office, University etc., will perform wonders for the Indian psyche.

The lack of a healthy racial identity has had serious consequences. Our young people have heroes (film stars, politicians and under-performing cricketers) who would be correctly called a bunch of loosers in most other societies. India does not have a single proper war memorial even though we have excelled in two world wars, and four major wars after independence.

The most serious consequence of a lack of history and/or racial identity, is that a mediocre, shallow, European woman is currently the real power behind the Govt. I will not be surprised if most nations are laughing with contempt behind our backs.

Thanks for reminding us of Prof Warrier
by Manoj on Apr 24, 2006 06:57 PM  Permalink

We are too busy making heroes of undeserving people to take notice of people like Prof Warrier. I hope things change but don't think they would much.
