Medha's struggle and Modi's counter, Central's inept atitudes
by sbhujanga on Apr 17, 2006 02:31 PM  Permalink

Any development should be well balanced so as to protect floura fauna and also the vital public need. This is the point where our Government and beurocracy fail miserably quite often.Medha may be right at this point of hour.If we analyse the net rehabilitation process of what so ever nature whether it is dam work, floods, earth quakes the rich benifits are reaped by only the persons close to political catagories and beurocratic influences but never by catagory having no lobby for them. It is a fact even in the case of so called reservation policy. The real poor opressed class is never benifited. Only the creamy layer and political & beurocratic big wigs take the entire benefit thus the Policy is creating the Opressed classes for tommorrow who are at present SUPRESSED classes under reservation policies.
Even if the advantage of drinking water facility for few thousands, agriculture development for few hectares thus improving economy by few crores can be seen Mr.Modi and his good group should be more positive. It is not Mrs.Medha Patkar's victory or cunning Gujarat opposition benches victory through some other route but it should be the victory in natural and humanitarian sense.

Let democracy work
by Arun Patel on Apr 17, 2006 12:19 PM  Permalink

Gandhi's approach of a fast unto death worked when people did not have representation in Government. That is not the case since 1947. If Medha believes in her cause, let her take it to the next election or to the Supreme Court if the law is being violated. But her approach of hunger strike says her belief is more important than democracy or the Supreme Court - effectively undermines what modern India is today.

The Indian Constitution is just fine, the implementation may have flaws. Medha, if you want to fight, fight within the Constitution, but don't try to defeat the Constitution.

IS NARMADA DAM JUSTIFIED?
by bhaumik on Apr 17, 2006 11:57 AM  Permalink

before blindly supporting the fast of medha patkar one needs to see stark reality in villages of gujarat. here water is scarsly avilable for most of the months in a year even when monsoon is normal. in regions of saurashtra, kutchh and northen areas of gujarat has been experiancing this situation since long time and with increase in population and development the demand is ever increasing. the ground water level is constantly decreasing.
the point here is there is no other big river in gujarat which can satiate the drench of gujarat. people opposing the construction always argues with one thing in mind that these dams can be replaced by small check dams but they need to understand that for check dams also you need water to check!
the situation in gujarat is so worsened that rajkot, the fourth largest city in gujarat, with a population of nearly 16 lacks is having water only on alternate days. jamnagar, a city of stratagic imporatance to country, with a population of 8 lacks is getting water every third day. and mind you i am not talking about industrial usage or irrigation water. what i am talking is only about drinking water. i believe this justifies the dam more than anythhing.

Ms. Sheela bhatt, Can you stop biased reporting?
by Mihir on Apr 17, 2006 11:11 AM  Permalink

Ms. Sheela,

This is the height of biased reporting just like so called drama of aamir khan where you read, listen and write about only one side of the coin and try to project these protesters as great followers of gandhi.

The whole nation should know the the truth that it's not rich farmers who will get benifit..its people who are far away from narmada..kutch and saurashtra, who will get benefit of this project.i myself being from saurashtra, knows importance of this and i can see people in this region have started gettinng water from it and completion of dam will further improve drinking water and irrigation issue.

people keep on talking about alternative and i had seen few debates, where NBA folks talking about water harvesting and other alternative.. people should keep in mind that water can be harvested IF IT RAINS. 7 years out of ten, we have hardly any rainfall in kutch and saurashtra. where will you harvest water? will NBA guys pour water from the sky? just stop this nonsense.

when it comes to rehabilitation, NBA guys provoke villagers not to take compensation as well as not to get rehabilitate and then they only make noise about it

stop writing nonsense article.

Join her,

It's so easy to get "Cheap Publicity" in India, no meter if it's against the nation's or state progress. If it's a really an issue of rehabilitation, then why Medha is fighting against increasing the height of the Dam. She should be active helping rehabilitate people and not against progress.

Every big project needs some sacrifice.

Gujarat is already rich (even before Narmada project is started). Narmada is a State project and not funded by Central government. How ridiculous that is Supreme Court is always ready to change its decisions for any activity against Gujarat.

In past, Medha tried to attempt to suicide manytimes because it was against the law (attempt to suicide). Now days she left that publicity stunt because that law is canceled by gov. In other word, police will not arrest (read save) her in attempt of suicide.

Medha is just a puppet. Try to go into the root of an issue before becoming blind followers.

Lets grow up
by Preeti on Apr 17, 2006 10:00 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

We need to progress like a civilized nation. The dam is important but so are the people whose lives will be doomed because of it.
The lands of Gujrat may become richer and well lit by the water and electricity produced by the dam..But should it be at the cost of the lives of our country men? Instead of fasting,Mr. Modi should come up with some scheme to rehabilitate the tribals who are being forced to give away their homes for the dam and also ensure that it is being implemented(thats very important). In fact ,people of Gujrat (who will supposedly be enjoying the fruits of the dam)could also contribute in some way to help these people rehabilitate.
After more than 50 years of independence,we still fight amongst ourselves like kids..Are we maturing enough as a nation?

Do you know ground reality? Do you know what has been done so far? Do you have any facts except watching TV and listening to bull shit of aamir khan?

Gujarat governement have given fund to other state governments too...to rehabilitate the villages.. what you want from people of gujarat? do they sell their houses and land and walk nacked on road to contribute towards fund? is gujarat government helping other states is not enough?

Know the facts and then comments rather then just watching tv and listening to bull shit publicity stunts of NBA and aamir khan...

Use your brain pleas... atleast once in a while..

thx
Mihir
