Its so sad to know of it.
by Anjali Gupta on Apr 11, 2006 02:41 PM  Permalink

Its really pathetic to know such discrimination exists in metros in india's top metros. Can imagine what wud be the condition in towns and cities.
I am staying in UK and theres hardly any discrimination among Indian communities.Be it hindu, muslim ,Gujrati or sikh .
Everybody minds their own business and they seem to be aware of the fact that they are here to work and live life without being bothered of catse ,creed and religion.
This problem is such deep rooted in India and brings shame to country that boasts of unity in diversity.

What you are exp is a very common thing.People's tendency is to cluster with similar beings. In US you have all andhras under one roof whereas here there may be some infighting.
Just as choosing a Hindu dominant locality was a secondary choice(not a true choice but a forced one),so do these society's.Meet them during lean period and they would welcome you with open arms.Thats Business.
Plz keep it out from all of us who truly dont have any illwill and hope the same

Its a bit shocking.

Dear Ashraf,

Its a shame to hear that. I am currently not in India and have lived and toured a good number of western countries. Its between Hindu & Muslim in India, but the rest of the world, its the same in different forms. True, I am not joking. Take France or England, the biggest issue government faces is this pocket civilisation. Having said that this is still not acceptable and we can give no reasons for such behaviour. France recently witnessed a heavy racist situation. Having seen things in some highly developed countries and read about things in Middle East, India a secular country continues to remain secular and I would attribute to a great extent that to Hindus. Though we Indians are brown coloured, I think we are one of the worst racist groups. I think thats true. Cheer-up! we all need to grow up.

Give me a break!

What does this have to do with you being a Muslim or discrimination only against Muslims?

Do Hindus feel safe staying in our localities?

In Mumbai, there are societies of Gujjus or Jains where people from other communities are not allowed to enter. Does that mean that a Maharashtrian has to have something against a Gujju? It\\\'s just that a certain community members don\\\'t find it comfortable staying with someone from some other community which has distinctly different values/practices/traditions.

Be realistic. This happens world-over, and ghettoisation is the result.

But this shouldn\\\'t lead you to quickly jump to conclusions like we\\\'re not one nation, or we discriminate.

How do you draw the line? Many Hindus won\\\'t accept a Muslim girl as their daughter-in-law (or Muslims won\\\'t accept a Hindu bahu) in their family, staying with them, sharing the home. Is it discrimination? So take this further, and some Hindus won\\\'t accept a Muslim family to stay in their colony, though they won\\\'t have anything against Muslims per se!

Check your premises and biases and be realistic.

Practical issues
by jj on Apr 11, 2006 02:33 PM  Permalink

It is easy to preach. Practically, there are some Compatibility issues(like Nonveg which might appear trivial but wud affect in the long term). I find nothing wrong in like minded(with similar habits) living together. This doesn't mean that the groups hate each other. (As a vegetarian, I DONT HATE Non vegs., But it is true that I cant stand the smell.., )

it is just live & let live attitude

Gotit!

You are tolerant and emphatize with "humanity" or you are indifferent to others humanity and well-being. I could not ascertain an answer from your response. I also wondered if you lived in other countries, i.e. the USA???, perhaps. Your response is rational and sounds non-prejudicial. thx
