Discrimination is a way of life in India,we've accepted it just like public urination/spitting.Its time someone pays for this and is set as an example. Many developed countries have laws that protect even immigrants from discrimination.I think the columnist must sue the person who mentioned this for a hefty amount even if the chances are slim of winning in a corrupt judicial system.
I strongly feel the way Rediff has gone the way most journalists/media write biased views, that is - concoting views and making sure readers click on this link as much as possible to generate more revenue for the website.
The heading/subject of the article at the first glance indicates an communalist view point but reading the entire article suggests the author's view point which is general and prevailing in this scoiety, that is communalism doesnt exist just between hindus and muslims but between all communities in India. I agree that the mentality of people in India is still way behind and needs to improve, which is as noted in the article.
The media can help in this cause by improving the readability of the articles and not creating unneccesary "read between the lines" scripts.
Why cant the media throw the article in proper light that highlight the issue of Hindus and muslims. Pathetic .....
How do you feel if your neighbor cook pork all the time, keeping in mind housing you are looking is not going to have much privacy, It would be the same feeling for some one who doesn't eat fish.
I think it is not discrimination, I call it giving respect to individuals and their believes and that is all India is about.
Sorry to hear about your case. But I had a similar experience 8 years back when I was looking a house in Malad (West). I insisted my agent to show me a flat in a particular building/community. He said politely 'they don't allow Muslims'. I was shocked......I am more shocked now after reading that things has not change since then either. And its spreading.
