I think initially you said you donot want to live in hindy locality.since you didn't find any good home in muslim locality, then only you thought of moving to hindu licality.so in your mind, you had already discriminated against hindus.isn't it?I think this kind of discrimination is mutual among hindues and muslims. It is nor right to blame only hindus on this.I have heard of discrimination among shia and sunny muslims also.

Its true in Calcutta as well
by Bhaskar Chatterjee on Apr 12, 2006 10:00 AM  Permalink

Its true in Calcutta as well. Worse, Muslim students from oustdie the city, do not get house rent in a Hindu house. Few got house by an assumed name, but had to vacate, once they were found offering Namaz inside their home.

So, there is nothing peculiar about Mumbai. Muslims never Mix with others. That's why this issue. The Sikhs do not have that taboo, and participate socially with Hindus.

thanks for slumming with us
by sanman on Apr 12, 2006 09:50 AM  Permalink

Well, why slum it with us then, Syed? Why not find a better country to live in? Then you won't have to force yourself to live near those you loathe. As I recall, it wasn't Hindus who dragged Muslims into India, it seems to be the other way around. By all means, please consider finding a superior "land of the pure" to live in. Oh, can't find any Muslim country that's better?

Pathetic
by Patriot on Apr 12, 2006 08:47 AM  Permalink

It's ridiculous that India has such problems. I was brought up in Bombay and now I live in the United States, and the reason that my family and I even moved to the United States were the Hindu-Muslim riots but yet you wont find me condemning any one group of people. It is the causers of violence that I condemn.

What I find pathetic in this situation is that in American schools we are taught about India, we are taught about India's history of equality of citizens. Throughout the history of Judaism, India was the only country that didn't practice any anti-Semitism. Even for the parsis, which place did they come to for refuge? India! Gandhi and also many of our founding fathers were against the discriminatory practices of inter-caste racism. Americans are taught about India's reputation of acceptance. Should they not be taught this, because wit such behavior we're contradicting ourselves.

It is true that there are some discriminatory people out there, but the keyword is some. Some does not mean all. If we create all Muslim neighborhoods, all Hindu neighborhoods, all Sikh neighborhoods and etc it will lead to massive segregation of the public which will ultimately lead to civil war

If you think it really is a problem read this....
by Pratik Joshi on Apr 12, 2006 08:08 AM  Permalink

Hi
I am really feeling sorry for you as it might be really disturbing to go through this kind of situation. But here I think there is few points to be considered. I live right now in USA for more then 8 years and you know the situation according the criteria you have defined is pretty same here too. Now what would you call that sitaution? For example, if you try finding an apt. or a house in black or either white or even spanish neighbourhood you might either end up being insulted, or abused or god know what. I strongly dont believe its pretty much a global problem rather then a cast based problem of India. Its just too easy to blame it in India, certain things to the mentality of the community. Oh and no offense but after whatever happened on 911, particularly muslims are being abused the most and sikhs too (just for wearing a turban and beard, please watch the recently released movie Inside Man if you want to get a flavor of how it is here..). They are being checked specially at the airport, denied service at so many places without any reason. What would you have to say to that?

shameless article
by Manoranjan on Apr 12, 2006 07:46 AM  Permalink

i) Why rediff is allowing to publish such article?
ii) Our muslim friend has suffered from the incident which is true.
iii) But the way he interpreted is wrong.
iv)Getting a good house in good locality is very difficult not in mumbai but in every where in India. There is discrimination every where, some times muslims face problem, some times sikhs face problem , some times hindus face problem. But not always not everywhere.
v)Its totally a personel opinion..
vi)OUR COUNTRY WAS DIVIDED ON THE BASE OF RELIGION.
The demand was done by a muslim, not by a HINDU. This is my country, what ever will happen to me I won't publish such a nonsense article with such a nonsense header. If you don't like hindus, then you can go to any muslim country. But staying here making such remarks is not tolerable. Why a marathi has not published that he won't stay in gujrati area.
I know many muslim people staying in hindu area but never complained. You are a literate but not educated. Its your luck that you are surrounded by hindus, so you could manage to publish such a article.

Blame everyone
by Vishleshak on Apr 12, 2006 07:41 AM  Permalink

Dont think it happens only in Mumbai or against muslims only.
I was hunting for a house in Hyderabad for my friend and was shocked at two different places.
One apartment community declined to entertain us - and they explained it frankly. That community was said to be only for Muslims.
Same city other apartment community wont allow him to stay as He was not a Gujrati.
So please dont write as if its only Hindus avoiding Muslims. We as a society are not tolerant enough.
Please dont write such heading for your column. its unfair for many of Hindus. They are either victims of such discrimination themselves. Also this attitude is not shared by many.

unfortunate but come on now!
by thyagaraja on Apr 12, 2006 07:21 AM  Permalink

I am a Hindu and feel very apprehensive about living in a muslim locality of Hyderabad.

Now, That is probably because of what I had seen or heard about some muslim fanaticsin the area (fanatics exist in every religion unfortunately).

But, I wouldn't write an essay titled " why I wouldn't live among muslims" or "why muslims should change their mindset" addressing the whole muslim community because I know that I can definitely live among people of any religion as long as they are sensible and tolerant. If I couldn't - then the problem must with me. Wouldn't you agree?
