India's foreign policy for almost a decade has been guided by the US.After the coup by Nepalese monarch on 2005,India had been in complete dilema on how to deal with the situation. It has been in complete mental block considering monarchy as one of the pillars of Nepalese soceity.
The US policy towards Nepal is guided by its own interest and its hatred towards the word "communist".But India being Nepal's neighbour, its interest is comepletly differnet from US.A developing and peaceful Nepal is always in India's interest.
Why is India so afraid of Maoist? No doubt the Maoist are creating a havoc in India. But it may be remembered that India's democratic soceity is much stronger to be threatened by Moaist insurgency in some pockets.
By turning their eyes away from the ground situation in Nepal where the people and 7-party political allaince(along with Maoist)is waging a liberation from the autocratic monarchy,India will just be hampering its long term interest with Nepal.
The UPA govt should just not be guided by some pro-US advisors and rather take a pragmatic approach to set up a political system in Nepal which suits both India's as well as Nepalese peoples interest.
Pkl. Tuesday,11th April,2006 The note read rightly underlines India's Angst ,inasmuch as the various developments are highly disturbing to India's interests in the welfare and peaceful growth of democratic polity in our natural ally. The likelihood of Indian naxali groups getting sucked up with weapons and logistics are fairly menacing, as events in Bihar ,Orissa or Chattisgarh lately suggest. If Indians can impress on Royal consent for genuine democratic Rights of the ill-used Nepalese masses,we can hope something right and proper gets started at- once.D.Goel
INDIA should never support any process which encourages maoists. As they will never give up arms inturn encourages naxlites posing a long term internal threat to INDIAN DEMOCRACY AND POLITY
GOI should not forget 1962 when they trusted Mao and lost our territory. Anything with Mao anyone to do with Mao or Communists should not be encouraged. GOI should join US and King of Nepal to bring democracy to Nepal and get rid of Maoists. If Maoists come to power, they wil be dangerous for India.
You have raised several questions in the contect of Nepal turmoil. Let me address one by one: Should it throw its entire support behind the political parties, even if...........? This is naive. India should be talking to parties as well as the king. we can not support the nparties which are fast losing distinction between themselves and Maoists. Can it make a distinction between the Maoists and other political parties? Will it......... Maoists are armed. how any govt can talk to armed "political party"? The distinction has to be made. king should talk to those Maoists who shun violence. How should it react to the feelers from the Maoists? These feelers should be ignored or at best be used to keep them engaged. maoists are using friendly approach to india as they know offending india can cost them dearly. whatever be the outcome in Nepal, it is not going to effect the maoists movement in india. Can there be a clash of interests between India and the US if India responds to the Maoist feelers? What options.......... There is no clash of interests if we support the King. If we oppose hi, we are not going to paid back with gratitude, a la Bangladesh. india, learn from history.
India should be supporting the King, whether or not he represents the masses. It is sheer its national interests that we must oppose the rise of Maoists in Nepal. In supporting King Gyanendra, India also happens to be siding with USA which is ok. I shall explain it why.
One,whether Maoists can be believed or not, but they will,in all likelyhood, side with China than India. with Mao ze Tung on all its eastern borders, it shall bring immense pressure on India to compromise on many places in the border dispute. This also gives access to China right upto Gorakhpur and east UP Bihar districts.
Two,Nepal's dependence on india shall decrease and India shall lose its political bargaining power with Nepal as the new routes through China become availabe to Nepal.
Three, there is a clear shift in US policy to see India rise as a mini-super-power and it is upto India to act like one.The US policy so far has been to oppose India through Pakistan who was happy to do their bidding. If US and India take the similar (not necessarily same), US will have no point in opposing India. This shall render Pakistan irrelevant in the new geopolitics scene.
I have a dear friend in Nepal who thinks the King is the best option for Nepal. The economy will and was better compared to the so called democratic govt that came and went. And you cant play games with monsters. The Moist have no agenda apart either than front of the Chinese. And they can never leave violence. The guy Muni justifies the violence by making his statments.
