fighting for good cause
by mohit gupta on Apr 07, 2006 01:36 PM  Permalink

thanks to rediff for posting this FAQ

Its a trend to think about only big people and dont think about weak people.
Proper inhabilation should be their for already dispersed people...then only height should be increased.

Medha patkar and and arundhati rai are social activists and govt should give importance to their voices.

Narmada Protest
by Malati Naidu on Apr 07, 2006 01:03 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

This article is good to give a good update but it seems to be very one sided. The Govt needs to ensure that all benefit from the project. Water supply is a basic need for human and this should be given priority. Yes many people will be affected but its GOVT's intervention and systematic approach to this would ensure all are benefited. The people around the Narmada valley have to think bigger and not just themselves. It not the question of benefits but the question of being compensated in minimal possible way.Yes corruption has to be taken off ...

Dear Malti

i find you are the only who wants to second side of project and other things Thanks to you as i it is the best solution for Kutch, Saurashtra ,Badmer , jesalmer and other rural part of Gujart

Medha patkar is nothing except bull shit , i must ask her to leave in rural kutch and Saurashtra area where for a bucket of water you have to travel 8 to 10 kms.so being on huger strike it would be good idea to bring 15 buckets in the day to single family , and i promice it would be highly noble cause done by her and other Idiots AAmir Khan , Atul Kulkrani and Rahul Bose

SSP is the Life Line
by Kushal on Apr 07, 2006 12:58 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I dont know much about the political issues involved in SSP but I strongly feel that SSP has provided a new life to millions in Gujarat so far. The Narmada Water is flowing in almost every river of Gujarat today. And these are the same rivers which we never used to consider as rivers few years back as there never used to be ample water. Now, when a state is progressing by an excellent project, people like Patkar (may be out of jealousy or a desire to fame) just dropping bombs in the progress. SSP should be completed at the earliest for better of human kind in general - with no more stupid issues like Narmada Bachao Andolan etc.

In this country, we always find people fighting for no reason and raising issues that actually dont exist. I strongly feel that Megha Patkar is one of them. Just because she comes from a social leadership family, she has no right to spoil lives of millions of people, who used to suffer a lot because of no water few years back.

Visualise this my dear Kushal: Say by some twist of fate or circumstance the area around which you are staying at the moment is rich in OIL reserves and for that matter the government decides to develop it by driving you, your family and your entire town out of your homes, decides arbitrarily and unilaterally on a compensation package without taking any of you in confidence, then send touts in the region to fleece you off whatever little you are entitled incase it is cash (and say if it is land they offer, it is someplace which is completely cut off from civilisation and where you have no clue how to sustain yourself!) and worse, in case you peacefully agitate they say you are a traitor to the larger national cause, what would you do? Not just that but if you resist, they blank you out as a statistic, play the media to their advantage and then send police reinforcements to forcibly throw you out a place where you and your family have survived and thrived for so long? Have a heart my friend, have a heart. There has to be some limits to our middleclass hedonism. For how long will we suppress the poor their basic rights and manipulate all arguments in our favour?

comment!
by Anirudha on Apr 07, 2006 12:53 PM  Permalink

i agree with Medha patkar that the Government should stop at the present height and not start other dams on other tributaries! The govt should liten to the alternatives NBA and co is offering for the water crisis in Maharastra and other states! then, if they feel its all a farse and is a difficult thing to implement, then they should go ahead with the dam and stuff!

narmada controversy
by Brijesh on Apr 07, 2006 12:46 PM  Permalink

I think its very sad the way Govt of India and a majority of urban population is treating the issue of Medha patkars hunger strike as either irrelevant or out of tune with India's progress. These guys should understand that India can progress only through sustainable development and not by unplanned developments such as the Sardar Sarovar Project. It is now a well admitted fact throughout the world that the damage caused by displacing huge population without proper rehabilitation facilities is much more than any benefit(s) what can ever be achieved by building these massive dams.

One should salute the unflinching support given to the tribals and the local population by Medha Patkar. The Government should infact seize this oppertunity and speak to Medha Patkar to show the other armed strugle movements that in the nation of Gandhi there is much more room for peaceful struggle than armed conflicts............

NARMADA BASIN
by Yogebdra Popli on Apr 07, 2006 12:34 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

There is an acute shortage of water and power in the region, and development of Narmada Basin is one of the best solution.

True many people will be dispaced and up-rooted. And so with many wars and partition we had in past and continuing through similarly in Delhi Demolitions and many new residential and industrial townships coming about through agricultural land acquisition. Similar is the case with widening of existing roads and railways.

The Key issue is the timely and judicious rehabilitation of displaced and affected people. This is the only core issue which need to be addresssed to by one and all.

NBA
by Rohee Dasgupta on Apr 07, 2006 12:31 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Its high time the government acts responsibly and shows accountability for such crimes. Technology at the cost of lives and dreams never!

Long live NBA! Medha Patkar's sincerity is a lesson for us all. I have faith that NBA will win their demands.

Am away from the country now, but will be glad if my earnest wishes for her quick recovery is conveyed.

Many Thanks,
Rohee
