Freedom that we dont care about.
by Nikhil R Khadilkar on Apr 05, 2006 08:37 PM  Permalink

This is a real heart warming story. As the writer correctly points out, we all should feel ashamed of our society for all the bad virtues it has. This lady deserves a Padmabhushan, for she had done it all for india, i guess more than what 100 so called politicians have done.

I wish you guys had a audio clip to add to this interview- just wanna know how she sounds..you should next do a feature on Lakshmi Sehgal - another illustrous Indian woman..

Sarawathy Ramaswamy
by RSamuel on Apr 05, 2006 08:24 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The last paragraph in the story is the cruel truth we are living through.

Independence has come to us at the cost of some really bad people ruling us. Again it is only some people not all.

However, we have improved and did a lot of development also to our country which should not be written off.

There should be more stories of people like Sarawathy Ramaswamy and their freedom struggles to remind young India a duty to perform.

Good article
by Archana on Apr 05, 2006 08:01 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Dear Rediff,

Thanks for brining out this article. It was very touching and patriotic. But, sad that such great freedom fighters are not recognized or not given proper monetary care at old age. I hope the government does somehting for this old lady and many more out there.

RK:

Looks like more than the message the article had delievered you were concerned about the chronological order and age of her getting puberty.

When a person gets old they lose the time or year details just trying to point out only minute details and leaving the bigger picture that article had tried to convey is very regretful.

In these days of selfcentred life when many of us do not even care for our siblings here is the woman who had underwent many sacrifices and lived her life with dignity, we are making comments on a old woman who would have lost track of time.

Wish we all can act little bit more humane.

Regards

Anna

Off by 5-6 years
by RK on Apr 05, 2006 07:48 PM  Permalink

Great story. I am not saying anything against the grit of this woman. For her to be knowing 4 languages is a great deal in itself.

But she seems off by 5-6 years. How convenient to have a birth date of Jan 1 1900. Reached puberty at 18? (heard about that, but very very rare) and carrying a baby at 48? (I have heard that happening too, but again, so so rare) Maybe she was born in 1905-1906. Moved with her husband at 12-13 and was carrying a baby at 42, when Gandhi was killed.

Inspiring Report
by Vijai on Apr 05, 2006 07:41 PM  Permalink

Its really moving, inspiring about Mrs. Saraswathy Ramaswamy and at the same time pitiful about the things she had to go through in her life to have reached this stage. Its hard to change people like politicians & Corrupt people who are already existing, but this report I hope will inspire the young generation that is going to be the future of tommorows India and take them in the right directions as there wont be many people left in the future to tell us about the ordeals that they had to go thru to make India as what we are now. I once again salute this strong and determined lady.

A big salute to a lady like her.. hope that this article is read by our money hungry politicians, and do something respectful for freedom fighter like her.How many of the current politicians have a true moral like this ? Current politicians are making fun of our freedomfighters.. , which can at no cost be forgived.
