Star Unstarred
by Amartya on Sep 17, 2005 12:01 AM  Permalink

Sania is definitely overhyped by our media which is running short of people to make "sensations" out of, Sania may be a decent tennis player but TOI branding her as a "tennis sensation" is kind of stretching things too far.
However the article written by TVR made for great reading.

Precisely as you say, does it matter to anyone else?
by Jean on Sep 16, 2005 11:52 PM  Permalink

Well-written article. But the question is whether this whole issue deserves to be publicly flogged like this, and covered by eminent columnists like you? As you have highlighted, to make or not make a compromise between religion and professional sport is the players' prerogative. As such, it should be left to them.
It really doest not serve anyone to question Sania Mirza's conscience in the light of a remark she would have made in an earlier interview. Since, she has chosen to play tennis the way she does, I think her decision is pretty clear!!! As you know, actions speak a lot more than words - especially, unprepared words uttered by an teenaged player in one of her first brushes with publicity!! She has made her choice, as she has every right to do. And why, oh, why are you, Mr. Shenoy, trying to pose 'moral' dilemmas which is not your concern anymore???
If a sportsperson chooses to play all covered up, as the Iranians did, thats their interpretation of their creed and playing in normal tennis outfit is Sania's. And since religion is personal, both are right! If the Maulavi thinks differently, he is free to do that, though imposing it on someone else maybe unfair!

IF U R IN ROME DO WHAT ROMANS DO !!!
by Sunjay on Sep 16, 2005 11:51 PM  Permalink

Its really bullshit to even think of replying to such nonsense things but there r some people who live hypocritic life and maulwis are one of them (with all respect to Islam ) ,,, how many maulwis who carry out fatwa to kill somebody has got courage to go and do it ,,, the thing is sania livews in India so its better for maluwis to try there luck elsewhere ,,, here we dont have any such restriction and what they would do when we get an international level female muslim swimmer , come to think of it how awkward it would look sania playing in grand slam fully covered ,,, peple laughing at her and at our country ,,,,, our country has moved way ahead in tehse things courtesy movies and new generation ,,, the trivila issues no longer exist ,,,sania will play as a common tennsi player ,,, havent they said if u r in rome do what romans do

This is very interesting..does anyone exactly know the fine line between modesty and indecency..i am not a religious fanatic..i would leave out Sania and her dress dode at this moment and ask columnists to script a few lines about Modeling..the carrer our young girls pursue..forgetting and loosing all their self respect and dignity..

I enjoy reading articles from Mr. Shenoy

when compared to other international women tennis players sania is much better. most of the pictures are published deliberately by press to expose certain things. if atleast avoid such pictures there is no controversy

Stop differentiating people on the basis of religion
by Sweta on Sep 16, 2005 11:47 PM  Permalink

Mr Shenoy

I do not know why do you have to bring in religion in the way of someone's talent & making her country proud! For God sake please stop making such trivial matters as dress code big issues. It is people like you who instill these kind of communal feelings among others.

It is a pity that even senior journalists have lost touch with responsible journalism and create issues where there are not or should not be any. It is time journalists of mr. shenoy's seniority start looking at raising the standards of journalism once again.

religion!

I guess Karl Marx was dead right in saying that "religion is the opium of masses$ illetrates".One word of advice to these self proclaimed maulavi's-India is a secular country by choice and if you feel so much to practice purest form of Islam ,pls migrate to Saudi Arabia!!! For god sake we dont want lunatics and Fundamentalists of any religion to thrust their point of view on us.

We Muslims are slaves of Allah SWT & hence it is obligatory upon us to Obey His commandments & to worship Him & Praise Him for His bounties. They have a greater understanding of Quran & Ahadith and hence they comment only based on the truth revealed in Quran & Ahadith. So its not wise to make derogatory remarks on them as they dont try to emphasise their own view but which is only Commanded in Quran & teachings of Prophet Muhammed(PBUH).We are commanded to always strive to lead a life completely based on Islamic Fundamental wherever we are so you have not rights to ask us to migrate which shows ur insecular nature.I dont blame u for this as most others u have been very much influenced by the wrong media propagation about Islam. Our Noble Prophet has informed us that "There will be a time when people of less knowledge of Islam will criticise Scholars of Islam" Today we see people commenting about Islam without any proper knowledge about the True religion Islam.
Try to explore Islam and then make comments! If possible read my message " What Islam Says?" .
Jazaak Allah!

Is this a matter to discuss.....?
by Sony Joy on Sep 16, 2005 11:38 PM  Permalink

hi,

is this a matter to discuss...?
sports is different and religion is different and for a true professional sports itself is a religion.
So don't try to mix sports with religion, all these are cheap publicity stunts.Let the sports persons be free in their sports and we will evaluate their performances not their dress, color, religion.
After all, Country comes first above all religion.

Sony Joy
