Let us talk about expertise in the disaster management.Katrina made the landfall on August29,2005 and the total area affected by the storm is larger than the UK in size and about half a million people were evacuated. And on Sepember 18,2005 there are reports of Mayor Ray Nagin going ahead with his ambitious plan of returning 180000 peolpe back to New Orlenes, possibility of another hurricane still looming large. In Mumbai, central railway took about one and half month to get back to its normal schedule. What do you think Mr.Kelkar?
Dear Sir, Yes sir i will totally agree with you sir, the inocent people like us are the victims of every tragedy sir, but i will not agree with your point that Third world country, Sir I hope you have seen Lou dobbs tonight in CNN, did you ever listen to him how they quote India and cheap labour. have you ever feel about it sir. Yes sir ofcourse we are cheap labour but we are equally competent with the american couterparts sir. there is no need for them to criticize others in this very rude language in the national television Sir, We never speak about any other country like this sir, that is the actual diffrence sir. Rama
Ram is absolutely right about his comment on two cities. Both storms in Mumbai & New Orleans where totally different & had no comparison. Also, its bad to compare how great we are based on natural disasters.
I read the messages in response to my column with interest ... Sohail's comments pretty much echo my own world view. India is beginning to shine, and as someone who is extremely proud and protective of India and my Indian heritage, even though my home is now undoubtedly the US, my motivation in writing this article was to strike a note of caution that pride has to be tempered with hard-nosed realism and a honest reckoning of one's own strengths and weaknesses.
As bad as it is to try to gain pride, self-esteem, self-respect and sense of achievement from others' failures, it is worse to do it with an inaccurate comparison. A good article.
Dear Ram Kelkar, Its a very well written article which brings out our heritage, our culture and traditions and our basic instincts of being humane. Its a well written article. ppl who are used to bulletts in presentation may find it boring, but if narration is interestiong, so is ur article. Well done !! Sushil Bhasin
It is understandable to say both were not tragedies of the sam magnitude. however there are a couple of things, the peoples response in Mumbai was phenomenal. Also with the facilities that the US has for 'predicting' calamities and more much more could have been done. As for NRI's lampponing the relief efforts here you have to realize that this also a form of criticism and President Bush continuing his vacation would have tickled Michael Moore pink. Don't suck up to any nation folks a spade has to be called one
