Reservations in India are like a run away train. Any which way these politicians like to justify, they are total nonsense and should be eliminated from all levels. They put India far behind. NVijaya Kumar
I agree with the author that primary education is one of the most important issues that can change the face of the society and economy a lot. I also agree that teachers should be better paid so that we can attract better talent to the profession. India desperately needs good talented persons to teach the students of primary classes. It is also necessary that the teachers be given special training to deal with the students of primary classes, i.e. they should be given training about the psychology of children and how to handle them. This is because we can find that in many schools, teachers resort to hard punishments to students to make them study or to maintain discipline in the class. But this adversely affects students' attitude towards studies and particularly poor children are losing interest in studies. Instead, teachers should deal with students in a caring way. Also, we need to completely revise syllabus for primary classes. The syllabus should be reduced and the curriculum should be made simple and interesting to students. This will increase their interest in studies.
India needs to spend enough in these areas. Only then we can give education to poor children.

Well I am not sure how Prudent is our politicians. One thing is sure it's going to be mother of all scam.
Our Politicians(Treasury & Opposition) have come together for a noble cause, which is sure to benefit them. I have never seen or read anywhere that politicians have actually done good in past by implementing such scheme. Many such scheme have come an gone few have become filthy Rich other have remained where they were...
All i can say its going to be Govt. Sanctioned Loot...
Dear Mr shenoy your concluding statement about 50 percent seats to be reserved for woman has many implications.first it would mean that all boys who fall in open category would continue to struggle for a descent college even if they have good marks. reserving seats be it for caste or women makes no good because in reality the deserving candidates never get to enjoy them.Reserving seats only makes a particular category lax since they feel assured abt their future. i believe reservation should strictly be based on income.in this way we can in some way help the "deserving" candidates.Instead of teaching women to fight onpar with men,by reservation we are making them more weak and dependable..not on men but now on system!

Raghavendra, The issue is not about "deserving" candidates. It is about social equality. Which is sadly lacking in India. I mean female children are getting killed in our country ( by one estimate, a million female children in the last decade). Providing reservation for women is a matter of correcting the balance of power - so that women live and don't die. It is about putting power in the hands of an oppressed gender that faces discrimination consistently. It is really appreciable that you show concern about women becoming "weak and dependent" on the system. I wonder what you think women's position is, in our society? Did it occur to you that they may prefer to be dependent on the "system" than on men? By the way, how independent do you think you are, from the system? You think they cannot think for themselves? They are perfectly capable of maintaining their "strong and independent" position. I
