The Slip is Showing again RS?!?
by Ruxak on Sep 10, 2005 02:54 PM  Permalink

RS is once again dreaming with his eyes open or
showing very limited vocabulary when he talks about
the "right word" being the invasion of Bangla Desh.
Can they really invade India within the next
century?? A few undesirables may wriggle in - and
one of the reasons to blame is 'the high and mighty'
of the East needing serfs and slave labour to do
their jobs for them while they lazed in the sun. Or
did he get instructions from Nagput to put in a
`leetel' piece of poison when on the job of
discussing New Orleans? After all to special people
every article is an open opportunity of spreading a
little poison no matter how far away the article is
in any way related to the topic.

As for India offering aid to the US in return for
the offer to us by US let me remind you that a
strong secular and democratic India politely refused
the offer of help and in fact pointed out to these
donors that we are actually helping out our
Neighbourhood who were also affected. India has
shown that even far more flood levels in our Mega
city where we had to spend the night in office we
could bounce back quicker and faster than what new
Orleans we bounced back.

A Dirge for New Orleans
by Bharath on Sep 09, 2005 03:09 AM  Permalink

My. Sanjeev,

Pls do not comment on how Indian governments have handled more catostrophic nature furies than Katrina Haricane in the past. Indian federal and state govts have done a remarkable job in handling the Earthquakes in Latur, Gujarat, Annual heavy cyclones in the East coast of Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Tamilnadu and also West coast in Gujarat and most recently the Tsunami disaster where in Indian navy reached out Srilanka and Martius for helping the people even before their governments have responded.

If you compare all this with the way how the US Federal government and Loisiana state govts have handled the disaster on hand: You will not make kiddish comments again on disaster management and handling of Indian Central and State governments.

New Orleans
by Vijaya Kumar on Sep 06, 2005 07:40 PM  Permalink

Very touching article. I stayed in New Orleans more than 1/2 a dozen times, each time a week or more. It is a very enjoyable city. Canal street where several Gujarati shops sell electronic goods, large number of food malls, the Madras India house like coffee (only place we can get coffee with Chicory) with dough nuts on the bay, the night life on bourbon are hard to forget. In spite of such tourism and constant sounds of celestial music by the black artisan who played for generations, the park where artists draw your caricature for a small price is hard to forget. What caused the problem-simple, not Katrina, not the breach of the canals that feed from Lake Panchatrain- it is callous disregard and absolute arrogance of an incompetent. I Never saw in my 34 years in USA the pride in ignorance, incompetence, and religious fanatism. When we see pictures of poor and sic, it hard to control tears. I wonder what happened to the Indians and Pakistanis who make considerable section. No newspaper or media talk about. Vijaya Kumar

Katrina

Time our PM showed the gesture of support to the US on behalf of victims of this horrible tragedy which is similar in its devatating effects to the tsunami or the Mumbai Cloudburst. Also time for our various Mutts and ashrams rose up to help these victims-in the name of humanity.

A dirge for New Orleans
by Reena on Sep 02, 2005 05:29 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

That was extremely well written.
All I am pretty sure of is that if a disaster like this were to happen in Bangalore or in Mumbai, the cities and people will simply be abandoned. The citizens will be left to fend for themselves. India can boast about a lot of things but it cannot handle catastrophes even remotely close to this. Half an hour of rain in Bangalore, and the roads are flooded. It is extremely scary.......The reason why we Indians have survived so long is simply because the heavens have been kind to us.

nice try dude
by Ravi on Sep 06, 2005 04:28 AM  Permalink
Nice try that heavens have been kind to us. To refresh ur memory, let me quote the "kindness of heaven to you' :
1. Earthquake in Latur/Osmanabad
2. Earthquake in Gujarat
3. Tsunami havoc in south
4. Landslides in North
5. Floods in Bombay
6. Severe droughts in North

So do you still call heavens as friends of India? Well we did have our sad moments.

One more thing: Based on the above situations, I can say with atleast some veracity that Indian govt cares for its citizens. Had the govt not intervened, cities like Nagapatnam, Latur, Bombay etc would have been obliterated to dust.

Population of Mumbai.... 12,622,500

Number of people evacuated in Mumbai...10,000

Cases of shooting and violence in New Orleans...countless
Cases of shooting and violence in Mumbai.. NONE

Time taken for US army/National Guard to reach New Orleans... 48 hours (by some reports)
Time taken for Indian army and navy to reach mumbai...12 hours

Status 48 hours later...New Orleans is still waiting for relief, army and electricity
status 48 hours later..Mumbai is back on its feet and is business is as usual

USA...world's richest and most powerful nation
India...a 'third world' country...which is, of course, a terminology invented by Americans

Reena, the US has not handled its own disaster well- nobody is praising the American relief effort, least of all the people of New Orleans. The US is the world's richest and most powerful country, so you cannot compare it with India. What this disaster has shown, as if proof were really needed, is that the US has a very backward( poverty) and brutal( behaviour of army, police) underside.
