Why don't mumbaikars find this utterly ridiculous?
by Sameeksha on Nov 06, 2005 05:24 PM  Permalink

The day this news was printed in the Mumbai Mirror...the news printed just below this was that the only earning member of a family had committed suicide because of overbearing debts. Has the govenment become so insensitive to the needs of the people who have given them this unlimited power? Have the people also lost all their sensitivity. Do we really need such a mammoth waste of money when the basic necessities are not satisfied? Please respond to this people....let this fire not die out here. We need to stop this move.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Memorial !
by Dr. Cajetan Coelho on Oct 30, 2005 01:07 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Libraries and archives in Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, The Netherlands and the UK has immense literature on the life and contribution of Chhatrapati Shivaji and the Marathas in the making of India. Quite a bit of it has been written by western writers, government and otherwise.

In India too, we have useful collections in Pune, Mumbai, Kolhapur, Baroda, Indore, Goa, Pondicherry, Egmore/Chennai and Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu.

In the good old days in our history courses in Pune and later in Baroda, we often came across the touching humanitarian concerns of Shivaji towards his own people, soldiers, opponents and those wounded or captured in combats.

Shivaji's life of prayer, respect and a sense of duty towards the other, justice, determination, protection of the oppressed, honouring widows, downtrodden, marginalised, sense of forgiveness, and patriotism stand out if one carefully reads the historical accounts by foreign writers as well as by indigenous scribes of those times.

A memorial to this extraordinary son of India would be a fitting gesture and a fine token of appreciation in honour of the virtues practiced by the enlightened Indian ruler of the bygone era.

Yes we all respect shivaji maharaj but we should keep the marine drives horizon untouched they can erect a memorial at elephanta which will be great tourist attraction also it will solve never ending problems of Gharapuri residents. Its a shame for us that even after independence these people are living in dark without electricity

But NO! NO!! to marine drive sea. We all should file a PIL against this issue

Shivaji statue
by Sriram Venkitachalam on Oct 29, 2005 10:39 AM  Permalink

This makes more sense than what we had heard some months back abt some politician who wished to replace the victoria from the CST terminus with a SHivaji Satue.
I think this would be awesome. I have seen pictures of sage Valluvar in Kanyakumari - which looks great in the sea. It would be more respectful to make an individual space for a Shivaji statue for the stature of Shivaji than to replace any statue with that of SHivaji. Also the landmarks of history shudn't be messed around with. I hope the statue of Shivaji they build is really huge with Shivaji riding his horse.

Re: Shivaji memorial to be set up
by Hemendra on Oct 29, 2005 10:15 AM  Permalink

Mr. CM, do we really need a Shivaji Memorial in the Arabian Sea? We have the great renamed CST Terminus, and we have the great CST International Airport, and also we have tonnes of Shivaji Maharaj statues in Mumbai and perhaps in every corner of Maharashtra. Why another Shivaji to haunt us from the Arabian Sea? Isn't this becoming an overdose of Shivaji? Enough is enough!

Do me a favour Mr. CM & also Mr. Deputy CM... Please gather your act together & get to some real business in Mumbai rather than erecting statues in the sea and elewhere. Better think of productive ways of spending money like widening roads, improving the quality of roads, providing pedestrian walkways along all roads, removing encroachments along streets, cleaning the streets, planning for metro transport expansion and bringing monorail services all over Mumbai. Do not try to copy New York, as you can never match their honesty and dedication towards their city. Mr. CM, please ask Mr. Narayan Rane to spend a few crores from his huge personal booty. You people are just sucking the common man's blood and building millionaire empires for your next generations. All you politicians are good-for-nothing...
