The notoriety of the criminally corrupt police across India is undisputed. Also, the police have become the creatures of politicians in almost every state of the union - this practice must be stopped henceforth. The need of the hour is to put a halt to their chalta hai attitude - in the US all police depts have an internal affairs division specifically dedicated to investigation police misconduct, and some even have civilian boards in addition. Better training, pay and working conditions will go a long way, but requiring accountability, responsibilty, ethical conduct and professionalism should be the major objective of the higher echelons of the administration, with prompt prosecution of violators. The people have no faith in the police, whom they view with contempt and even fear, with good reason, the said people thier taxes pay to protect and serve them.
