i must commend the author about this really insightful article. Its really sickening to bear that the person who rules your nation is in turned ruled by another lady .His decisions are not his own..but someone's else.It high time,,and sadly like a dynasty..this hidden monarchy continues.I wish and pray to the god..that people really understand their folly and remove congresss from power as that is the only way to put an end to this pseudomonarchy in this largest democracy
Ashok Mitra's Artice does not make lot of sense. We the people of India(more than a billion of them) are are surving and the whims and fantasies of the Congress(Nehru-Gandhi) Dynasty. I have been reading the comments of the people to this article and everybody seems to be whining about this fact. My question to the writer and the people making this comments is what do you do to correct the situation. Ashok Mitra just makes a point and leaves it at that. Does he or for that matter anybody else commenting on his article have the intention to improve the situation. Let me ask you this. Has anbody tried to run for a local municipal election or for that matter any poll which would help the public.I know it costs money to win elections. But the intellectiual communicty(people who can read Mitra's article in english) can just read and comment on the article.Do any of these people to make a point at least stand for an election. This atleast gives the people an option . If the people get good option regularly then they might start electing people who can help improve the situation. So stop whining and commenting on the situation and try to do something about it.

Yogi, First of all it is useful to be informed and reminded, whether action results or not. Not everyone can act, but most people can support action. This is not uncommon;even during our freedom struggle, most people continued their lives, while a few volunteered for satyagraha. But the genius of Congress leaders under Gandhi was to make sure everybody was informed about the issues at stake. In fact, this article and the message board comments are part of this effor to be informed. That is a columnist's job - not go out and run in elections. Secondly, standing in elections is not really the solution. There is too much money power in political parties for anybody to match them; then you have to get into the legislature, where the majority rules and try to change things. This is true in developed nations too. The viable solution is to strictly regulate political parties - for example, one of the reasons for the current debacle is that the power to give tickets in elections is with party leaders. That pretty much makes them kings. This CAN be regulated by law. Another solution is for ordinary people to become basic members of political parties - not contest in elections.
The people of India are the emotional lots and the dynasty tag will remain forever on this family. There are regions provide leadership but at national level the family which has the essence of goverance and regional leaders follow them with their party cadre spread over such a vast area keeps the family as dynastic one. There is complete vaccum of mass leader of national level as most of the best leaders speak in regional tome. What we need a nationalist whoose outlook put the peoples united of this country, who so ever has the potential will emerge as national leader and when there is none such to watch, people fall on dynasty. A family who has expertised in goverance should not make us envious but must be subject of our inspiration to make our family grow in that dimensions. Nksagar
Capable people are not limited to mere dyanistic politics. We all know how much sacrifices this family has given for the country.I think that leaders right from Nehru to Sonia Gandhi had a great support of masses. If not so then why people are with them.
This article should be publised on the front page of all leading newspapers of the country so that the author's views (which is the harsh truth) is known to the innocent citizens of this country, who still sympathesize with the Congress Party.
The Dynasty is the mill-stone around our country's neck. It is sad that the Congress is reduced to a back-bone less organisation. When you talk about the young scion of the dyansty imperiously declaring that he would have become PM anytime he wished, I am reminded of his father, the late Rajiv Gandhi imperiously announcing in a press conference of the transfer of the country's Foreign Secretary. As a prime minsiter he had no doubt the right to change the bureucrats. But the way he announed it astounded all. He said in a press conference that the the country will have a new Foreign Secretary.
Pkl. Friday, 21st Oct. 2005. Sri Asoka Mitra writes that reality in 21st Century India is that there is no escape for the UPA who dread loss of office to challengers to Nehruvian House of Roses but to realize that young MP from Amethi is the promising next Chief come what may... Having seen this prognosis, as on the inevitable chemistry of vote-banks in Hindi region and the invariable fears of the rest of socalled "progressive" non -hindi regions UPA allies should gladly annoint the heir -apparent for perpetuity, lest the carpet of empowerment is pulled from under their comfortable seats..I think it is too simplistic analysis of Voter's behaviour in this divisive country... Yes you are Jeorge Fernandes II or his big brother....It is not very hard to understand your agony and pain seeing the most successful primeministers are from "THE DYNASTY" and it was not a surprising at all that you have written this article on the statements which were "alledgely" told by Rahul Gandhi (which even tehelka said that Rahul did not gave any interview to it. and that was false.)...it is mere a waste of time, the very best in the country either it be politicians, Technocrats or economists they all have been working this same "DYNASTY" ...why..? do you think they are fools cant go into any other party and server them...because they even know, the pulse of a common man is with these people and they understand the great sacrifise made by "THE DYNASTY" for the country hat is why they server the dynasty. You are in the same line as Jeorge Fernandes who is not against the party but the Dynasty if we take off the name below the article then everybody will believe that this article is definitely by Jeorge Fernandes.
