Chennai is surely one of the most conservative cities in India. The attitude of the older generation appears to be - since we did not enjoy our youth, how dare you? But this attitude surely frustrates the young. Ask any IITian and you would know. When those who belong to Bangalore and Mumbai go back, they just can't take their eyes off the nicely dressed females on the streets. I completely agree with the author when he says that Chennai is a conservative city.

Hey machhan!
Ask me what?? Do u mean to say gals look good only when they expose?? What is the prob being an IITian?! Saarang sud be the total cultural letdown ever happening to the Indian culture as opposed to what it claims to be. Its ppl like u who run the saarang shows nah. U really don't have to copy the others culture da...is it such a difficult concept for a gr8 mind like urs to understand. U ve a social responsibility too...our country is still a poor country and obviously we need to improve ourselves in so many other frontiers before we think about publicising our perversions. Till then all the citizens ve to bear with it...or else run to those other countries...nobody stops u. I'm sure u will run back to India when u wud look for a groom for ur gal kid. It is for u ppl to run back to India, they are defending their culture night and day from u. Atleast this can be easily understood I think.
Chennai has some really f'ed up tradition and belief. the city wants to be recognised in the world for their technology and education...but when it comes to relationship and personal affairs.....it has nothing to provide or to protect someone rights to appreciate personal feeling for one they love. following tradition is good advice....but it should not be forced on people. USA has many tradition and many cultures...but government never interfers with personal lives of people. if Chennai wants to be recognised as IT mega city...than it might have to accept some other changes it brings along.
Scene 1: No comments. I do support holding hands..
Scene 2: Why is there a need to Kiss a girl/boy (forgive me.. but I didnt know that he/she is your spouse!!), but I would take it as an offense if I see two people kissing in public.. u dont need to be in bharata natyam stage always.. you can go for discotheque too.. only thing is to restrain yourself..
Scene 3: OK.. The teachers comments were bad.. but "Sleeveless top and tight jeans".. I think they have come to college to sit in classrooms..
Scene 4: There is a way to express your thoughts.. That actress was at her worst in doing so.. and she can't blame the ENTIRE women.. remember - we have our own female companions over whom we have utmost faith - some whome we believe right from our birth... who the HELL is she to talk about pre-marital sex or virginity!!?? (Iam controlling a lots of anger in my words..)
Scene 5: Just a comic - perhaps just to show how INSANE the author is - in trying to justify what she/he is tring to tell..
Big Brother's Right Mates! Using the word "Freedom of an Individual" you cannot ravage a culture. Things are getting far worse. There's nothing wrong to put an Iron Hand to preserve culture. Well done Big Brother.
hi. Nice article. The same happens in my city kanpur.
Two college goin students a boy & a girl sitting under a tree, a bit close, and suddenlt the SO appears frm somwhere. Makes boh of them stand up & asks them wht the hell were they doing here.
The boy answers they r friends ... One tight slap from the big bro ..
The boy says they r girl friends and boyfriends .... another tight slap ...
And a written apology taken frm both of them ..
Wht the HECK ... its valentine day and the damn SHIV SENA .... its all shit politics & shit society rulzzz.
whats this.. this is too much.. few things are correct.. few are wrong.. but it happens in other cities too..
Chennai is a great place.. ofcourse ppl here are conservative.. but that doesnt mean ppl should write like this.. there are lot many positive things.. write abt them
I dont want to build an argument with you on you ill depicted cheap taste article on Chennai, As much as we are against the rules coming up in colleges on liberty etc., we do have a moral responsibility of supporting the city Police drive against the corrupting Western culture and some actress who wants to influence us on premaritial sex, We have a culture which we are proud of and as Tamilians we would rather like to be safe within our own limits. The western influence in the culture has already been quite successfull in deviating the youth of today from the main goals in life to enticing bars and disc for a short time pleasure and a long time regret. We request you to kindly consider your thoughts once again before you provoke people to a rebelious nature. And before i finsih, I respect the rediff community for some of their articles which are presented in a very effecient manner, Please do not disgrace this wonderfull website by your cheap tastes and article that are not worth enough to be read out loud on street corners. Jai Hind
This is nothing but a common BS. if you want to have that much fun... y show it up in open? if you can justify this, soon you will also debate for public love making.
Come on.. this is india... don't just show your energy in writing this futile topic...
