How dare you kiss in Chennai?
by Ashok Narayan on Oct 04, 2005 08:15 AM  Permalink

Fantastic article. Shobha Warrier has exposed the hypocracy in Chennai. I am (or perhaps was) a Chennaiite myself and am in my early 30s. Looks like I was able to do things with more freedom in my college days than kids get to do now.

The Big Brothers in Chennai seem to be oblivious to the concepts of 'Freedom of Speech' and 'Invasion of Privacy'. Do they realize that in many cases they are infringing upon the constitutional rights of people.

Its extremely sad to see my beloved Chennai deterorating to such depths. In a city where politicians are not questioned for polygamy and well connected people indulge in 'extra-curricular' activities at their whim, the common man is crucified in the name of 'Culture & Tradition'. Whither culture & tradition disappears in these cases I wonder !!!

Why only Chennai ?
by Shrinivas on Oct 04, 2005 07:49 AM  Permalink

Good Sarcastic article. Well I do agree that things have changed and people need to change. But the way Chennai has been pointed out - is a bit err well too much. So, is the writer telling us any place else in India - any other metro, this is acceptable? Any place else in India people don't bat an eyelid because somebody kisses or hugs or goes around? If it's Bangalore-you would find PDA-a.k.a Public Display Of Affection in areas such as Brig road and MG road. I woul love to see guy and a gal getting mushy in the middle of Ulsoor in Banglore-that would be interesting.

I do accept the fact that Chennai has been a victim of these so called, "Moral Police". And it is very stupid when Colleges point out students talking to the opposite sex.

FYI-The colleges are scared that if a guy and gal from their college elope - the parents blame the college and the college name gets tarnished. Do you think the College mgmt honestly cares abt what the students do ? They don't give a damn. All the mgmt is bothered abt is their "respectful" image. If you want to change the way "Big Brother" acts - You will have to change the common "Maami" thinks and the common "Chettiar" acts.

About Chennai!!
by Abhishek on Oct 04, 2005 07:46 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

If all these scenes have a little bit truth in them, then i must say Chennai is a doomed city. This is hard core conservatism and so called society cleaning at its disgusting best.

Ms Amma should have a look into this rather than simply putting in more kilos!!! And about these big bros, i can simply say this is monkey business and those monkeys with long tails prefer to sneek into others space, getting no fruits in the their tree...

Hah!!

RE:About Chennai!!

No one need to say any lecture about chennai. This city is proving itself. Thats why we have soo many Big MNCs here and rightly called as Detroit of South Asia. Can any IT compay survice in India without its presence in Chennai? Its all because of our culture and responsiblity we are producing sooo many Geniuses and Scientist for our country.

Holy Goodness
by Ashok on Oct 04, 2005 07:16 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

How can anyone live a life this way, in this generation? holy goodness, I would advise the big brother to come over here (Mumbai) and try those tricks... u gonna be in bad form mate!

I do respect the cultural standards set by cities (esp. in Tamil Nadu), as my relatives are from there.... but there is a limit to cribbing over trivial matters, cant the freaking big bro work on other SERIOUS issues? rather than running around couples doing all they like?

With the claims here... I would have been visiting the cop house day in and out, had I been in chennai!!

Set your priorities right, Chennai... and the city will prosper, run behind the couples, and make things illegal... and hey mans innate quality of trying to break LAWs will emerge

Cheers

Ashok

There is no wonder kissisng is allowed in the beach area of Chennai. Interior city Coimbatore is have the parks where many unmarried girls are made pregonent and the watchmen are getting perk for allowing. Slowly other cities are following the suit.

How dare you kiss in Chennai?
by Ashok srinivasan on Oct 04, 2005 06:29 AM  Permalink

This article had written in bad taste. What was the issue in Chennai. The hotel didn't have permission to conduct this show after mid night. That is the rule and they should follow. At least Girls in Chennai are safer than Delhi or Mumbai. If someone like Shobha feel it is not acceptable then why don't they keep their mouth shut when girls got raped in Delhi? It is all happened in middle of the night . That's why chennai police took some pro-active measure rather then re active like Delhi police.

Chennai and big brother
by udit on Oct 04, 2005 06:18 AM  Permalink

I think the big brother should have a look a the dance sequences in Tamil movies (in that case for all south Indian movies). They must stay cool and composed after watching those pelvic thursts. (y can't they think of generating power from them..since India is lagging behind in power genration).

Big brother can go n have a look at the Amma (her secret of generation of wealth). Please spare people like us, who wants to dance on weekends, want to go around with galfriends, wanted to get cozy at times. Hope u guys become more mature and beahave in a more responsible manner...than like a kiddy in the nursery school. Last but not the least thank god...am not in Chennai...

cheers
