Bharat Natyam?
by Ramiah Ariya on Oct 05, 2005 04:34 AM  Permalink

Shobha,
I think your column is excellent; except for the repeated reference to Bharat Natyam. I think you have lived in Chennai. You should know that none of the "moral police" running about in Chennai would themselves watch Bharat Natyam. In fact, for most of them Bharat Natyam is an "Aryan" dance form with mostly Telugu lyrics. They would call Carnatic music and Bharat Natyam and any finer classical art as in opposition to Tamil culture.
The issue is at stake is not between rock music and dance in dance floors and Bharat Natyam. By implying that you are doing a disservice. Classical arts are present all over the world with a dedicated small audience. There is nothing wrong in that.
The issue is between a set of Dravidian parties, that wilfully disrespect and try to control women, and the rest of us. The issue is more about controlling women (mostly) and young people, than anything to do with Tamil culture. Dravidian parties do not consider Bharat Natyam or Carnatic music as a part of Tamil culture anyway.
So stop insulting Bharat Natyam watchers. I am young and I watch Bharat Natyam as well as rock bands. Please don't fit us into your imaginary categories.

Big Brother
by Raj on Oct 05, 2005 03:50 AM  Permalink

Excellent built up story. Yes, we Chennaites are culture respecting people but have high tolerance level than any other place. We are the most sportive crowd in the country ( ask the criket fans across the world ). Anyways, kissing is something personal and a beautiful act of sharing love, but need not required to be displyed in public. The guy with the holding hands story is a stupid who has never been to our Marina beach. We are Indian and we prefer to stay so.

i didn't know thins are so bad in chennai.i have been to tamil-nadu thrice..twice to chennai and once coimbatore..and i must say the experience has not been the pleasant one.

if chennai aims of becoming the IT and industrial city..it shud open to different cultures and have a cosmopolitan outlook.

are you part of the so called modern generation
by Chennai to US on Oct 05, 2005 02:35 AM  Permalink

Hey how about your daughter having sex at 18 and getting pregnanent? Are you ready for that? The only reason why we should not be encouraging public is that the teenagers will blindly follow what they see in movies. We are still far away from the numbers we see in US for divorce rates and teenage pregnancies. By the way do you think any body will marry you if you had dated a 10 to 15 guys? You donn have to read the Mahabharata and Bhagavad Gita but atleast learn to value your culture and find out why there are certain restictions placed. Learn to under stand what you have.

Some diff angle
by Bala on Oct 05, 2005 02:08 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Well the point is.. there is some restriction in chennai..compared to other metros..Good for ur family..not good for u :-)
It doesnot mean our big brother always searches for lovers/couples instead of doing his routine duties as such..First of all Loving itself is looked as a big Crime in some places (well there is some sector that started accepting that nowadays..Hats off) and treating lovers/couples in the city with such a third level treatment from our brother when looked up in some other angle makes us realise that many ppl in chennai are using the image of couples/Lovers to do some Illegal things which is the main reason for this Action of our Big brother....May be Yes..May be Not..

How dare you kiss in Chennai?
by chennai to US on Oct 05, 2005 02:08 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

How about your daughter having sex in a hotel? You broad minded North Indians should under stand that we are still not reached the divorce rates in the US and the teenage pregnancy rates. But we will soon be there by the way you behave. Becos your children learn all these from you. By the way have you ever read the Bhagavad Gita once and know what it talks about? Donn reply back to me saying that it does not say that you should not kiss in a public place. Are you the so called generation which blindly follows the western culture and not under standing where it is leading us?

Will you marry a girl who have had 10 other affairs? If you are ready for it go ahead with your kissing, dancing and partying

Warrier is a south indian name, not North indian, and Shobha is a female's name which means she would have a problem marrying a girl ( with or without affairs). There is no need to insult other contrymen just because of their region, even Bangalore is cosmopolitan and it is not Norht india dominated. Chennai is conservative face up to it, you can call it right or wrong but if an article on such trivial stuff elicits responses that abuse other parts of the nation, then all i can say that it does not seem to be very strong on the tolerance and education front either

Your Imaginations are too much to offend Chennai youngsters!
by Vikram on Oct 05, 2005 01:57 AM  Permalink

Maybe i would accept with the Park scene, but not the others..Pls dont write crap jus to make people laugh.. sure youngsters will get offended reading your pranks!!..
The way you speak is not the way what it is today.. Offcourse! We still have the healthy culture and youngsters and others know their level of limits.
We have a broadmind but not blind like Bombay, Delhi or calcutta..
Big brother are not so immatured to disturb people when they know its privacy and not an interfering business..
Offcourse we have values to our culture and People aslo know abt safe sex.Well I think Tamilnadu is much more literate and matured than anyother north cities and people..
