Think Twice before you speak or write anything
by Hussain on Oct 25, 2005 01:14 PM  Permalink

This rules looks like Taliban, Iraq (Chennai will very soon become rich, because very soon Bush is going to declare war on Chennai and occupy Chennai and chennai economy will improve). If kissing and dancing is wrong then what about the Tamil movies very soon all the Tamil actres will go the Tirupathi. And please don't compare with other cities. Many persons from Chennai are working in Bangalore and we respect Tamilians/and persons from Chennai.

My dream is a liberal and freedom filled Chennai
by Liberate tamil nadu from moral policing on Oct 24, 2005 05:25 PM  Permalink

It is inexplicable that Chennai seeks to position itself as a gateway city of the future but, at the same time, wants to clamp down on even a hint of cosmopolitanism.

AT FIRST it was so contemptible, it was not worthy of notice, this moral policing that has suddenly gripped Chennai. Now, it has gone beyond being merely annoying to a point where it threatens individual freedoms. From imposing dress codes on adult students to gate-crashing private parties to laying siege on a popular Tamil actress who was frank enough to express her views on prevailing sexual mores, this moral brigade is now in people's faces.

The double standards of this brigade take the breath away. Those spearheading the protests against a statement by the actress Khushboo that a man should not expect virginity in his bride, have never protested against the lewd and suggestive lyrics of Tamil film songs. Similarly, the newspaper that ran pictures of women drinking at a private party in a five-star hotel, suggesting that their behaviour was immoral, ran an ad campaign that had sexual innuendo screaming out of it.

It is quite clear that multiple motives are fuelling the controversy. A few weeks be

Kiss In Chennai???
by Narayan on Oct 24, 2005 03:48 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I agree to the fact that Chennai is very much a conservative culture, But am against moral policing.
Boss, in this age of fast paced liberalisation, modernisation etc., people like me have to balance with the best of the two worlds!
Instead of educating people on what not to do, Big Brother, please educate the young minds what to do...
The so called custodians of the engineering students, please educate them with basic etiquettes that may be expected when they join an MNC?
Educate yourself not to mind what you see in real life today. With people so mature enough to take responsibility for their actions, which people of your gen did not even think of. Kissing publicly is far more better than the crap that people like you enjoyed seeing secretly in night shows at third grade theaters, cheating your parents and wives!

Iam also sympathetic to the Big Brother, in the fact that HE is irked by the youngsome twosome doing things which HE had always wanted to do, but couldnt and is now too old to do these now!
Big Brother!, get young!

hypocrites!
by Neil Leons on Oct 22, 2005 03:10 PM  Permalink

People of chennai..

Fact 1- this article is not the absolute truth, its just the slightly exxagerated imagination of a very good author. Its simple, amusing and gets the point across.

Fact 2- Its funny, its just meant to be fun. Not to be taken literally. Somehow people of the chennai do not have a sense of humour!! Especially about sex...wonder y? Its the funniest thing in the world!

Fact 3 - The men who wrote against this article are hypocrites & probably would jump at the chance of kissing a woman....I moved here just a few months ago and have seen female friends leched at, which i guess is expected...winked at ...bold! But was even grabbed by a desperate local...This i pressume is acceptable???

Fact 4 - I am sure another major problem is that this article is written by a woman. Kudos to you, but sorry womans lib hasnt hit the south yet!

The problem is the city is stuck in a time gone by, & is a chauvinist society...still largely isolated from the rest of the world!

My only advise, get a life & let others have 1!

Why shouldn't big brother take of this?
by Hari on Oct 22, 2005 12:43 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Hi all,

I am really surprised on seeing all these responses. I didn't see much mistake on Big Brother side. Here are few examples to support Big Brothers:

1. Foreigner die due to eve teasing on late night.
2. Delhi school children caught for MMS abuse.
3. Using actress Asin photos, an canada native was cheated.

Do you want to open all the cases...?? where do you go after all these issues... to those Big brothers..right?

Prevention is better than cure.. They are preventing you from most of the things from Western culture.

Think before you suggest...Look at chennai now and how it was before 20 yrs in growth. I think we still maintain some culture in the city. In the meantime, think about Bangalore and Mumbai.. Chennai is always the best and will be...

Regards,
Harihs

How dare you kiss in Chennai?
by Narasimhan on Oct 21, 2005 01:02 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

We Chennaiites are proud of our culture. We cherish it. We have not converted events like Dandia and Garbha into showbiz events. Our temple Utsavams are much larger events. When you live in a city follow the rules otherwise get out. Nobody is begging you to stay. If you are comfortable in places which encourage such acts you are free to go there. I am in North India presently and every day there is a report of rape and molestation. Recently a friend told me about a survey which has found that there is an increase cases of abortions amongst teenagers after Dandia! though I am not sure about that report. I am not claiming that Chennai is free from rape , abortions and Aids, but I am sure it is much less. This is because of the strong values which we still adhere. Can a woman walk in the streets of any other metro alone wearing her jewels without any fear? In Chennai she can. Of course people would complain that women wearing jewels is not modern and liberated women should discard everything jewels, mangalsutra and .... If that is the sign of upliftment of women then sorry we chenaiites are not for that. People can look elsewhere. Leave us alone.

Mr please shut up your big mouth you do not have to tell women what to do and what not to do
what is wrong in speaking up for women's rights in a country where the birth of a girl child is considered an occasion to moan ? who says discarding jewlry and mangalsutra is a sign of empowerment ?do you know what is empowerment to a woman?
you know what it is like to suffer in silence in a culture where every women is always wrong? then shut your mouth and please male chauvinists let us women live in peace

Learn to respect culture
by jayakumar S on Oct 19, 2005 02:39 PM  Permalink

If you think that you should be permitted to Kiss and hug on the roads, parks and hotels as modern trend, I am sorry to say you are in stone age. It is more of adam and evil story. They never had closed places to do that those days.

Chennai is a place which respects traditional indian culture when compared to any other city in india which is developed to that level. There are parks in chennai where for years and years lovers come and join hands [valluvar Kottam, Panagal park, Besant nagar beach etc]. Slowly it started becoming places for immatured youngsters and part time pros. No place in India where the population of the city's originated crowd is more, they want to loose their culture. If you look at places like Delhi and Bangalore, it is the crowd which moved from other places are more. So there is no culture in these places.

Nobody restricts to kiss or for that matter do anything in your own place. No culture in India permits you to do this in Public. But the generation has changed a lot following westernisation only for the wrong doings and not for any other disciplinary things which western countries do. It is shame on them.
