Death penalty for Abu Salem
by Ramaswamy on Nov 13, 2005 04:57 PM  Permalink

Since an undertaking has been given by the country it would be wrong to go back.

Giving such an undertaking has proved that we are not assertive and has brought shame to the country.

What's the point in extraditing him if he cant be punished properly!

Ramaswamy

Pardon of Death penalty for Abu Salem
by Shubhendu Sen Roy on Nov 13, 2005 04:48 PM  Permalink

The Gov. should ask families who lost a husband, father , brother ,sister.........it should have asked them whether the loss was repairable and whether the dead were dispensable......before making the promise to not give the offender the capital punishment.

In other words the Gov.should feel free to give the death penalty if charges are proved .

One needs to remember that had India not signed the written undertaking Salem would not have been extradited in the first place.
We need to respect the word given to portugal which in its own right condemns the capital punishment.
You may say that a person like him doesnt deserve to live but now we need to realize that if Salem were to be given the death sentence despite the written agreement, Portugal will automatically become the safest hide-out for all the wanted criminals like Dawood and others because then under no circumstances will the Portugese government extradite them no matter how big crimes they maybe involved in. At the max they may be tried by the Portugese police for passport forgery and other such crimes but a death penalty is certainly out of question.
It will be tough for the family members of those killed in the mumbai bomb blasts and other heinous crimes to see this man spared with his life but i think now we have an obligation and we also need to remember that Salem would have never come in our hands but for the written agreement which may in future help in the capture of other criminals.

Death Penalty for Abu Salem - Is it correct or wrong?
by S.R.Venkataraman on Nov 13, 2005 04:40 PM  Permalink

Whatever insight one derives from your article, it seems to be such a stupid act on the part of Indian Government to have given such an undertaking to the Government of Portugal not to give any capital punishment to both.

It seems the politics never has a boundary when it comes to convenience. What our government has done is just that. Now, one feels that what is the use of this whole exercise on the part of CBI and Mumbai police in a situation as this.

It is evident that so many hands have benefitted in this gory episode including politicians with vested interests to create a divide in the minds of the people and to cause a lasting fear which will suit their motives.

More disgusting is note the lack of support from the international community including the U.N. in applying pressure on Portugal for an unconditional extradition to the Indian Government which should be at liberty to deal the way it feels correct applying law to the best.

The results of such acts was witnessed around the world and no human being can be in two minds other than a capital punishment for such acts.

Though the loss of lives or property cannot be recouped now, it atleast would send a clear signal

Definately death penalty should be given to salem . Because the crimes done by him are unpardonable. After all the interrogation and extracting all the information , special court and hearing should be conducted . So that the process is fast .When i was reading news on rediff yesterday it was very shame ful to see brigade of lawyers standing and ready to fight in defence of salem . Government should ensure that the trial is conducted fast , as as long as salem will be in custody terrorists will remain no stone unturned to get him free .Remember Flight IC 853 hijack and government surrendering in front of terrorists , Case of Mehbooba Mufti kidnapping , when Mufti Mohammed sayeed was minister two dreaded terrorists were released to set her free. Only after Salem is hanged and all others connected to Mumbai blasts are convicted , there will be some consolation for families and relatives of those who lost their lives iin blasts. And then only their soul will rest in peace.
