I am actually related to this woman(very distantly thank goodness). I have lived in the US my whole life, though I have visited TN and once met her.

Only one question: Why do you vote for her?

She is slightly loony if you ask me. She claims to be well read, and my mother who is an academic tried to talk to her about some books she supposedly read. I think she just looked up a list of books online that sounded good, and never read them. Then she went ahead to ask my mother is she had read the latest Daniel Steele book, as if it was some kind of actual literature. My mom could hardly keep from laughing.

We were at a pooja at her house...which is absurdly lavish for a politician by the way. I can hardly believe how much money she must have wasted that day. Apparently these poojas are regular business for her.

People of Tamil Nadu...you need to consider who you vote for more objectively.

Bravo Jaya
by Rubal on May 24, 2005 02:09 AM  Permalink

I work in Bangalore and my only memories of Chennai till recently had been of harsh weather and tamil speaking people. In January this year, I had the opportunity to be in Chennai after a span of few years. And to be honest, it would be an understatement to say that I was impressed and stunned by the city. Clean roads, well managed traffic, flyovers, underpasses and to top it all, the best airport in the country by a mile. I had heard from my friends that Jaya had done miracles for the state, especially Chennai in this term. And I can bear testimony to this fact, for whatever little I saw. It is rare to find leaders like C.B.Naidu and Jayalalitha. I know that Jaya has a history of scams to her name, but in this country show me a minister at the central of state level who doesnt reek of corruption in some way or the other. I am thankful to those who at least do some good for the people as well. It is truly a shame that we have leaders like Karunanidhi and Laloo and the leftists who wont shy from selling this country if they could benefit from it.

Kudos to Jaya for a job well done. I hope the people of the state come out vote in her behalf. Wish her all the best ahead.

Columns should not be biased
by Satish on May 21, 2005 04:04 PM  Permalink

Dear Shenoy,

While Congress seems to support karunanidhi,ur column supports Jayalalitha.
When got a chance to write a column it would be better if you write without any bias, keeping the larger picture and the varied readers in perspective.

yeah Right!
by Satya on May 21, 2005 03:13 AM  Permalink

I think the author himself provided the reason and
it is not so great. Both candidates won because
of sympathy and because people do not have a better
choice. Jaya sucks as did all her predecessors
in TN. People did not vote for her because she was
good, but because she is least of the worst.

Iron Lady wins
by S. Venkataraman on May 21, 2005 12:12 AM  Permalink

I totally agre with the coments of Sri. Thobey Srinivasan on the subject. She is fully aware of her of this caste factor. With this in mind she does every thing to make the caste factor a lame duck and wins the heart of the people. It is even doubtful that whether she could have been defeated in the last Lokh Sabha Polls. Something is fishy somewhere for this unprecedented defeat. She knows by now and I am sure she cannot be mown down any combination of opposition till her last breath. Kudos to the iron lady.

The Iron Lady Wins
by J Chacko on May 20, 2005 07:47 PM  Permalink

The fact of the matter is that no party in the UPA dispensation has done well since their coming to power. Congress fared miserably in Bihar, Jharkand and Maharastra. Its allies faced a similar fate in Jharkand and Bihar. The same thing is repeated in Tamil Nadu. NCP is the only party which has done farely well.

Don't you think all these parties think about the futility of their link up Congress?

Hail Amma
by Srivatsan on May 20, 2005 07:03 PM  Permalink

Jaya is the best administrator in India as of now. Not that I am her supporter. She has done a lot of good to the state.

When Tamil Film Industry was in the dolddrums she resurrected it back by banning all illegal CDs and automatically the industry got back its money.

Secondly when there was a strike done by government employees she gave a befitting reply to all by dismissing some employees.

These two daring instance prove how great and bold Amma is.
