UN
by Saravanan on May 18, 2005 11:57 AM  Permalink

I strongly agree, India is a self dependant country, even many developed country depend on other country for their economy. Thoe India depends on others , but the effect on leaving the UN will be less. I feel India should threaten UN by saying they will walk out of UN if we don't get what we want and deserve.

India's contribution to UN
by Matbar Negi on May 18, 2005 11:52 AM  Permalink

Mr. Sriniwas,
You hv talked about the contributions. Which way the G-4 specially India is contributing more than P-5?? I think India sends more troops, fine. But then it is not for free, they are getting richer and the govt also gets the FC. There is a big competion to be deployed in UN Peace Keeping Missions... And then you say the whites are paid more than others for same peace-keeping duties, how??? I hv not seen that, I work for UN Peacekeeping Missions. What is India's share??

Thanks,

Matbar Negi

a very ''in the face'' analysis...
by Gopals Shelke on May 18, 2005 11:43 AM  Permalink

a great write-up, absolutely enlightening analysis and it feels someone has given a very tight slap in the face of people who still advocate the kind-hearted free-flowin support of Indian government to an organisation that itself is in a crumbling state due to its own internal contradiction.. the beurocates out there should realise that its high time they need to analyze the returns on investments they are generosly making not only in the form of monetory help but also by putting so many lives at stakes .... in all these not-so-yielding peacekeeping missions ... it also becomes more interesting to learn and take a bold decision as to whether our nation should continue its participation when nations like Us and Uk are going the extra mile everytime to take unilateral decisions ,despite repetitive pleas from the not-so-effective UN body and making the discrimination all the more exposed and highlighted.

I really appreciate the author for his in depth analysis and putting it as an eye opener...

disagree
by sundara raman on May 18, 2005 11:42 AM  Permalink

being one of the founding members of UN, its not in our interest that we leave the UN. instead, we should show what we are. 1. withdraw all our peacekeepers deployed all over the world first. our soldiers doesnt need to die for someone who doesnt pay his due respect (either to his life or to his country). 2. when US can stop its due from paying, INDIA too can stop paying anything to the UN. 3. let us participate in all the forums of the UN only as a spectator and not as a activating partner. 4. No power in the world can ignore INDIA at this juncture. 5. Lets muster our strengths for getting the due. 6. When something is against the interest of INDIA, lets blindly oppose it, no matter how costlier it is.

Insane
by prasad on May 18, 2005 11:40 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

A very insane suggestion. We become even more isolated by coming out of UN. Instead, we can make to security Council w/o Veto and then use the status ti get 'things done' by using some 'tactful' diplomacy. For gods sake, we are not N.Korea and not trying to blackmail ...saying that we dont give money or troops to UN.

Please remember on thing. In current world scenario, blackmailers always get better deales. Look at Pakistan.

Let me stick my neck out. I prophesize that in two to three years time, North Korea might become a stragegic ally to US.

You will think i am insane too. But that is how world moves.

The Right Choice !!
by K.Anantharaman on May 18, 2005 11:16 AM  Permalink

Really a thought provoking article!!

I am surprised by the views of the author which is exactly in line with my thought while discussing ths issue with my friends last week.

It is high time for India to completely review its stance and its "principles towards its foreign policy and external affairs".

After the death of erstwhile USSR the UN becomes the mouth piece of USA and the Secretary General as its drummer.

What India has achieved sofar by its principled stance ? The net result is Nothing. We send our soldiers for Peacekeeping operations world wide while the Bangladesis drag our BSF commander Jeevankumar and torture to death.
Our politicians concentrate more on disrupting and abstaining from the Parlimentry activities rather than persuading to take action against the culprits. It is not the first time Bangladeshis are doing this type of act as 16 Indian jawans were stripped and tortured to death during 2002.
Where were the UN and "peace loving nations" ?

India is a self-sufficient country and pulling out of UN won't do much against its interest.

India should seriously consider from pulling out of UN rather than heading a spineless organisation like NAM.

UN
by Dr. Vivek Vadke on May 18, 2005 11:16 AM  Permalink

It is high time Bharat asserts itself in international fora. Specifically in the case of UN, if we are compensated less for our military service than 'white' nations, we should refuse to play ball. I agree with Shri. Rajeev that we should make it clear now that a permanent seat at the security council without the veto power will not be acceptable to us; simply put, we refuse to be treated as second-class citizens !!

Re: UN and India
by Ram on May 18, 2005 11:12 AM  Permalink

I request Mr. Rajeev Srinivasan to please check his facts. Switzerland was admitted as a member of the UN on 10th Sep. 2002.

It is true that it is not a member of the EU.

The UN has simply ceased to be a force at all. Never mind good or bad, how can someone be either if they have no force left? Hence what the UN needs can best be described using medical terminology...HRT i.e. Hormone Replacement Therapy.

India should leave the UN and instead concentrate on building itself as a superpower in every respect....then India can emabark on building a rival system of international cooperation.
