Being permanent member without veto is waste. The largest democracy in the world has no say in UN means nothing. We can simply leave UN and we make another UN with like minded nations.
I full agree with Mr. Srinivasan. India can make its presence felt by staying away from a toothless oraganisation like UN where the dictates of US are the rule for the organisation. It is not a secret that we are the emerging super power in all the fields such as economy, IT, Knowledge, nuclear etc.. & no one can just afford to ignore us. It my personal belief that Nehru era has been the worst for our foreign plociy where we have missed lot of opportunnitie whether it is the selection of partner countries or otherwise. We must get out of the mess called UN immediately
Membership of Security Council without the Veto Power is like making a Forceful personality a 'KING without the CROWN'. Decades back the Western Powers had made a tiny country TAIWAN a member of Security Council in the absence of CHINA. It was only after the general world opinion weighed in favour of China that the Taiwan was replaced by CHINA. Obviously, China was also given Veto power. Now that Russia is not the powerful USSR any more that it is the Western Block, which moulds the United Nations to the way they want. India should not take the half baked cake now that the unsolicited 'TITLE/HONOUR' is being bestowed on the soon to be a 'Super Power' of the world a la China of the late sixties. I dont think that India should leave UN. Why should we? VINOD TULI
But did you stop short of expounding further on this idea?
I think G - 4 should not only walk out of UN but also create a competitive UN. Sounds incredible? Think deeper and you will be convinced as I am.
What do we promise? We promise proactive conflict resolution, dedicated security forces, more dum per dime and a democratic setup. Without saying it we promise freedom from US hegemony. We also promise a separate WTO which does not view the world with american glasses.
Initially we will need some founding members. I believe we can easily find around forty. USSR could be a jackpot in may be 5 years and ex iron curtain will join.
The economic clout of India, Japan and Germany would help. Anti chinese feelings will help in asia. Anti US sentiments will bring the middle east. Africa will have some respect for our NAM status.
It will be a game of numbers and may be we will have more members than current UN in 10 years time. We will help the world by making it a multipolar one.
Kofi Annan's statement of enlargement of the permanent members body without any veto power to the new members is nothing but pure discrimination. And when the flagbearer of an organisation holds such views, it is very unlikely to change the settings in a verbal war/debate. India should threaten to step out of the UN. But there might be strategic losses as well. To this India should look back at its own recent past--- the nuclear testing: with the threats of many sanctions and aids that were likely to be removed, India did not hesitate to go nuclear. So, ALL THE BEST INDIA. Hope you wont just play the verbal volley-game anymore.
I fully agree with what Mr.Rajiv said. There is no point in continuing as member of the US NATIONS ORGANIZATION repeat US NATIONS ORGANIZATION. When it should be called as UNITED NATIONS ORGANIZATION, there should not be any bias or favouritism on any country and all the nations should be treated impartially. Having met with such an illtreatment, we should withdraw from the membership of UNO as it is a blow on the self respect of the indians. There should not be any compromise on the issues pertaining to self respect. No Indian likes to be a second class member of the UN Security Council. UNO should not be a platform for ushering the US proposals and should not be a cavasing agency for the US policies and ideas when they are worthless and against the interests of other countries.
Going by the dailies and rajeev's online post on rediff ,India is definitely losing more than wining as far as being in the UN is concerned. Yes our politicians after freedom have been weak and got the nation into signing treaties , organisations which made the country more shackled. I think its high time India starts taking a strong stand against any unfair deal .But all, this lies in the hands of politicians who have to for a change think of the nation rather than their own selfish desires. Obviously India should try to do things jointly with G-4 but if it does not seem possible then it has to take an independent and strong stand. Ask for what you deserve or kick the UN. Dont only say that India is a nation of brave , prove it.
I perfectly agree with the author. It is high time that India should stress its points and concerns in a more forceful way. UN and US is taking us for granted. Let us not grant them any more generousity.
If UN is a failing body, then the responsibility lies with all its members for failing to make it work - and that includes the Indians. And honestly? India isn't the US. No matter how much we like to pretend, we can't afford the global backlash that we'll suffer if we walk out from this organisation. And neither can we do without the support we recieve in our efforts against terror, if only verbal.
Absolutely I agree with the author....India should go out of UN if it is given what it wants.....
As of today...no one can ignore the power of India.....
We should fight for our global rights!!!!!High time...Our Politicians & Officers....Wake up from the sleep and try to Fullfill the Dreams of our Great President Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam.....and millions of Indians.....
