Indian Democracy
by prasuna on Jun 24, 2005 06:14 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I just have one comment to add, from the last elections turnout I think it is only the illeterate, the poor, the adivasis, who do their civic duty and vote religiously in all election. (Of course what kind of leaders they chose is a different question). The literate (I cannot use "educated"), the so called thinking class considers it a waste of time to vote and takes pride in its lack of participation in democracy.

Unless the literate segment of Indian society realizes it civic responsibilities, the largest democracy in the world will only be a "Paradise of fools"

It is surprising that there are people like Sridhar in this contry who believe that she was right in imposing the emergency .

There was no external or internal threat warranting the declaration of emergency . But definitely there was a threat to her position as PM after the Allahbad High Court judgement .

Yes.I still remember the black days and evil effects,In fact only Gujarat and Tamilnadu were like islands of democracy during the mergency. I am happy to read about the character of babubai patel We can hardly find officers like him. Congress never learnt a lesson from the black days. We are happy about the functioning of mr chandramoli and his impartial advice. We require politicians like mr Babubai Patel and bureaucrats like mr Chandramouli.

non-rational
by sridhar on Jun 27, 2005 01:23 PM  Permalink
I think the writer is more emotional than rational. No individual with a rational bent of mind would even think of imposing emergency in democracy when there is neither internal or external threat.
Sridhar

The article is flawed. Indira Gandhi did the correct thing by sending Atal Bihari & LK Advani to jail as they were opposing the emergency. Pls check the facts & reasons for imposing the emergency. Atal Bihari & LK Advani are the face of the BJP and have often done things just coz its anti-congress. Whether it was opposing the emergency or setting up relief camps for the sikh victims of the 1984 riots ...... Indira Gandhi was a great leader and it is the right of the Gandhi family (and all its succesive generations) to rule over India and Indians.

the last sentence is an eye opener!

all polititians who were not fortunate enough to be born into the gandhi family pack ur bags n go home...

And yes, Gandhi family! ITS A MISNOMER ANYWAYS - ITS NEHRU FAMILY, basically... the Gandhi in all names starting from indira gandhi is in no way connected to Gandhiji... its from Feroz Ghandy; later changed to Gandhi by an affidavit - and has been used more than any other name for political mileage...

poor Indian public!!!

Valuable insight but i deny that people vote judiciously
by Bharat Kranti on Jun 24, 2005 05:14 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I had heart and read a lot abt emergency, bt this article is diff in a fact that one gets the feel of the situation.

however, i deny that making of govt is a democratic process if you consider the way its carried. i.e. 60% voting, ppl in age grop 15-17 cant vote, voting in places like Bihar n UP are 100% based on Power and Caste.

conclusion, only 20% of voting is judicious, but that doesnt make a govt, specially in the time of coalation govts.
