By bringing issues not directly related to the topic such as they conveniently overlook their supporters' role in the mass murder and rape of Muslim women oppressed 'Hindu' women, to sati deaths, dowry-killings, girl child sacrifices to appease bloodthirsty goddesses the author thinks he is strengthening his argument. If other criminals commit crimes, the author wishes to sanction and institutionalize those crimes for Muslims. Where does this logic lead to? If we do not criticize the killing of animals, should we not condemn the killing of humans? Instead of bringing Muslims to the mainstream, this author does a great disservice to them.
The issue of is certainly not acceptable to any decent society and if you read islamic books IT IS Un-ISLAMIC TO THE CORE.
Now we should also talk about the behavior of all the liberal, educated, modern hindu friends of mine who wrote all their frustrations about muslims, personal law and the religion, BUT NOTHING ABOUT IMRANA'S FATE. No body even used the SYMPATHY WORD. All you amazing people where only writing your sheer dis-like for the religion. I WONDER WHAT WOULD YOU WRITE ABOUT A SIMILAR INCIDENT IN RAJASTHAN, WHEN A SIMILAR LOCAL PANCHAYAT MADE A MARRIED COUPLE AS BROTHER & SISTER. I don't think so none of you so called civilised hindu people even know abou this, B'COS the SO CALLED INDIAN MEDIA NEVER PROPAGATES SOMETHING ANTI-HINDU. Only things like Imrana's episode is flashed all over india & special documentaries and may be bollywood movie is made.
As I write this, I remember another incident which media did showed but not proppgated. A 5 YR OLD GAL RAPED BY VHP OFFICE BEARER IN VHP OFFICE IN CUTTACK.
Now I wonder anyone will write anything about that rapist and the victim'm RELIGION AND HER PERSONAL LAWS

I completely agree with your keen observation that the writer has done his job by just giving the flame to well. This is what the above reactions of the people was expected. Still, as a MUSLIM I beleive that ISLAM is the BEST religion & even if you think & comparale it with others, its the only COMPLETE religion which provides all the solutions for the so-called civilised society of this century & will remain the true till the universe exists. And now about hindutva----Dear writer, what made you so sincere to write about this issue as there are hundreds of thousands of worst issue in India committed by HINDUS. The reason that Hindus demanding to impose the UCC on muslims is self-explanatory that they just wanted to degrade Islamic Law, but out of the total muslim population, how many muslims seeking the UCC???????...better hindus should understand that it was their religion which was really outdated & was impossible to practice in this century & even was critized through out the world....UCC stikk needs some nore amendments to for hindus to make the UCC secular for all the hindus......
The author points out the evils in the hindu society...sati etc. If such outdated hindu practices can be outlawed as per indian law, why not outdated islamic practices. Why is everybody pussyfooting when it comes to criticising islamic practices, some of which have been outlawed by islamic countries themselves.
Sticking to the stereotype, the author has established his "secular" credentials by ending the article on a note of hindu bashing, even though it is irrelevant to the discussion.
You spent a lot of column real estate on trying to put forth the supposed "flexibility" in Sharia interpretation. My dear friend, this is WRONG in keeping the fact in mind that this was a CRIMINAL case involving no less a charge than RAPE. It would serve better, if people advocated NON-INTERFERENCE of the socalled religious elite in the lives of the ordinary. Imagine even a Shankaracharya pronouncing some edict? The so-called intellegentsia of not only INDIA but this planet would leave no holds barred in Scowling the Brahminical Tyranny!
Even though the latter is good, the former NEEDS to change if millions of semi-literate muslims are to be freed from the clutches of the socalled Mullahs.
