As only a few of us point out, what happened is CRIME. All the talk about religion and secularism is nothing but smoke and mirrors by people of all faiths to deny the poor woman JUSTICE. Irrespective the fatwa discussed, what in heck is being done about an admitted RAPIST?
Who cares what school of what thought of what faith discusses the repercussions to a marriage?
To those of you hard of hearing: THE WOMAN WAS RAPED!!! WHAT ARE WE DOING ABOUT IT???
yoginder sikand must get himself to think straight first. Justifying in subtle terms, what the deobandis are doing is an insult to the rights of that lady who was raped.
and it is not only the political parties who want to derive mileage out of this. Many Experts like Mr. Sikand thrive on such issues.
1) Deoband is a place where there are many madrassas and each madrassa has many Mufti's. Do you any body including Yoginder know who the Mufti is and from which madrassa?
2) Fatwa is just given. It is upon the people to accept and follow the fatwa. No force (army or police) is sent to separate Imrana and her husband. It is still upon them if they accept this fatwa or contact other Mufti whom they know would be better.
3) When a Rape word comes I think that there should be more than 1 person involved in raping 1 victim. One person of an older age doing it alone raises doubt.
4) Whenever there are articles related to Islam, I find people get more time and more comments are passed than other articles. The main points are kept aside and Islam and Muslims are more criticized.
5) Writers like Yoginder Sikand always find these kind of controversial matters so that their articles get more hits and more comments from highly educated people of Bharat and they(writers) become famous.
I am regular reader of rediff articles and based on that i had to write 4 and 5 point. I would ask rediff.com to just display articles and stop the post comments as all comments useless and baseless.
Can somebody pls explain me what is a fatwa?Personally i feel it is absurd for any government to follw two or three parallel system of justice. one the panchayat second shariyat and third our police and law courts , all i one same country. I fail to understand what right these so called religious leaders have to do justice the way they want. tomorrow i can also be issuing my own Fatwas. Is there any law to check these dark age illiterates?
Sir, are you truly not ashamed of writing such ridiculous articles:
a.) Your detailed study of which school should have done what is hilarious; bottom-line is fatwa has been issued and the personal law board has approved it. If some Muslims opposed the fatwa good but the fatwa still holds. Why are you blaming the press and the Hindus for this?
b.) For Sati and dowry related problems we have the Indian law and no Hindu saint/priest decrees on it and even if they do they are punishable. In the case of Muslims they can be governed by a different law - wow and you defend this!!!
c.) Dont try to live in self-denial that there is a problem, I am amazed how you can carry forward this negationist attitude of yours forward (for any reader out here I suggest you read the book "Negationism in India" by Koenraad Elst and the credentials of the author and his fraternity will be truly exposed.
If you are not blinkered (I equate you and your counterparts to the medieval church in Europe who would oppose any rational and scientific arguments) and open your eyes you will figure out that the world is totally different from what you want us to believe. Please grow up sir...

Thanks for reminding me this. I was responding to a specific article and that is what I have done to show how the author has taken away the main issue by giving absurd logic.
I definetely feel for the woman involved and for any woman whose modestly is outraged. But when a specific and different line of thought is brought in, I believe, that even this needs to be countered- you might not agree with me but well...
Sir, on your inference that rape does not violence well I am not so sure about that too...

Sir,
A rape has less to do with sex than it has to do with VIOLENCE! The woman was attacked. She was robbed what little was left of her dignitiy - as a woman and as a HUMAN BEING. Can you not see this? Are you blind? Your response to the article - whatever its strengths - clearly show that you are more interested in your intellectual point than what someone else has suffered...
Even the articles discussing a muslim issue especially of jurisprudence moderately(and noting that jurisprudence in islamic world is part of religion) will not desist in attacking Hindutva or making unsubstantiated claims against Hindus. The first part of the article with author 's so called genuine desire for dialogue in islamic community is clarified by the last paragraphs showing author's position or that of who he is pretending to represent is not far from those killing and troubling innocent londoners.
