Strange occurrences in Indian Science
by Dr T S Raman on Feb 27, 2005 08:27 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

This kind of strange episodes have become peculiar in Indian science. Some of them are as follows.
One Ramar Pillai claimed to have discovered (or invented?) a secret formula for producing "herbal petrol".
Some scientists obtain a patent for medicinal use of cow urine "distillate". (Actually, what they used was the residue after distillation, not the "distillate".)
The UP State Cow Protection Commission claimed that a coating of cowdung will protect buildings during a nuclear attack.
A child "prodigy", one Tathagat Avatar Tulsi gets his name entered in the Guinness Book of Records for passing all his examinations right from class 10 to MSc at the youngest age, but he is unable to explain simple concepts in physics. He had also "passed National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by CSIR after passing MSc examination".
One Aasis Vinayak propounds a "theory of absolute creativity" and also develops "Vinayaks Hydel System". Aasis claims to have got "acclaim" from physics Nobel Laureate Dr Herbert Kroemer. Later, an outraged Kroemer denies it! In fact, Kroemer called Vinayaks ideas a bad case of scientific nonsense.
The conclusion: Indian science is a delusion.

Just because a couple of incidents occur whereby the hoax is publicized by the media which itself buys up the idea before checking the authenticity, does not make any nations Science especially that of India delusional. The details of singular incidents are provided correctly but the conclusion is as hasty as that comitted by the media during the last month.

Saurabh - NASA topper
by SHAILAJA MENON on Feb 26, 2005 03:17 PM  Permalink

This is a type of discouragement to the brilliant students.

If some private classes are involved in such type of scandal, the student should not be held responsible for that. The government/police should search the owner of Bansal Classes and bring the truth before the public.

Today, when parents are spending lot of money on the education of a child, activity of such type of illegal private Coaching classes should be stopped. In the case of Saurabh, he is not from well to do family but as he is brilliant student, his parents had sent him to this coaching class leavig behind their economical hardness.

My request to the Government as well as to such type of Private coaching classes is that "DON'T PLAY SUCH DIRTY GAMES WITH CHILD'S FUTURE".

BOY!
by thapa on Feb 26, 2005 02:47 PM  Permalink

This kid has done his homework. Next upcoming spinster eh? What is amazing is that the president`s office got conned too. They let the boy meet the president only on the basis of newspaper stories. And the reputed national daily i subscribe to (read The Indian Express) also need to have some fact checking department before publishing newsstories as a scoop. In all i guess a joke gone too far.

Media Hype
by Indian on Feb 26, 2005 01:21 PM  Permalink

Dear All,
This just goes on to show how immature our media is. It just wants to highlight millionaires, 'toppers' and stars without even making a background check. It is a pity that the president of India spent his valuable 18 minutes with this hoax guy. Media just wants to print/publish news that is flashy....never bothered about how it can make people think in a more mature way.
Down with the immaturity of the media.
Regards
Indians

Ascertain truth before publishing
by Vinod Kumar.S on Feb 26, 2005 11:29 AM  Permalink

It is always good to learn about the success of an Indian in any part of the world. At first after learing about Saurabh's feat every Indian feels proud. But it is always the duty of the media whether print or electronic to ascertain the facts before publishing. Now it is not only a mockery of Saurabh but also the shallowness of Indian media. Also I feel it is the mdeia that rises people sky high and drop them with a thud once it is not working in their favour. Please avoid such embrassments in future.

cheat
by NASA topper\' Saurabh has no proof on Feb 26, 2005 11:19 AM  Permalink

Without showing any proof , he better shut his mouth forever. I think this is anothe Ramar pillai episode (Herbal petrol). He already fooled lot of people including president of india. He better concentrate on his studies first so he can achieve what he is dreaming about now. Rediff should be careful about this type of news. You should always ask proof before publish this type of news. Because our country's prestige at stake.
