India, the Diabetic Capital of the Globe
by Kunuthur Srinivasa Reddy on Feb 16, 2005 05:12 PM  Permalink

Sensationalism and Science do not go together if not they drive in opposite direction. It has become a fashion for every body including Indians to target India for all evils of the World whetherfor disorder or disease. It is no doubt that there has been steep growth in diabetic population in India essentially because of the decline incommunity life and spiritual outlook among people. Further, craze for quick and illgotten wealth, intolerance to others fanned by fragmentation of people based on caste, creed, race, region and religion, majority and minority etc.are the added factors of mental stress which in turn triggers a disorder like 'Diabetes'.One should examine the cause-effect relationship and effort to remove the cause to retard the growth of any disorder for which political will is what is essentially called for.

India as diabetes capital of the world
by Raj Khalid on Feb 15, 2005 07:26 PM  Permalink

There is nothing new in the fact that aids research has sucked more money out of important research programmes than anything else. India is also the leprosy and TB capital of the world. Yet very little attention is given to these diseases. Since AIDS affected westerners there was a huge hue and cry. AIDS is preventable, malaria, TB and leprosy are not, these deserve all the finding we can provide. In fact even if the world does not appear to listen, India must allocate all the research finding towards leprosy, TB, malaria and diseases like diabetes.

I have often heard that the increasing use of PUFA containing cooking oils used to prevent cardiac illness has led to an increase in diabetes. Maybe grandma was right after all, a teaspoon of desi ghee is better than a tablespoon of PUFA containing oil. In fact the oil ads are very misleading. There is no such thing as OIL which id "healthy for the heart". All oil is high calorie and we should cut it out completely. A small amount of ghee maybe better than all the hyped up oils.

I would welcome views on this.
