It's heartening to see that the United Liberation Front of Asom is finally willing to come to the negotiating table. The issue of sovereignity is a non starter though. Inspite of all the negligience that the Assam has suffered, secession has never been an option for any true Assamese. As Assamese we have been a part of a much larger identity of India and the plain truth is that sovereign Assam doesn't find any echoes in the herats of the populace.
As Assamese people we would like to see the question of 'integration' being discussed, rather than the question of secession.
China does not tolerate dissent, rebellion or anti-national activities. Any rumblings are swiftly crushed without any compassion. However, China is an extreme case. India should tell all rebels, goondas, anti-national elements, etc. - be it in Jammu & Kashmir, North Eastern States and naxalites in various States to lay down their arms and surrender for rehabilitation. Otherwise, they should face the wrath of the defence forces and police and be ready to be killed, decimated and totally wiped off. Something tells me that Prime Minister Singh is a gentle hearted man. It is high time that he becomes tough and ruthless. What India requires at this time is officers of the calibre of ex-DGP K.P.S. Gill, who motivated a demoralised Punjab Police Force, equipped them with superior arms, ammunitions and gadgets and offered rewards for killing terrorists. Such competent officers will be able to challenge these terrorists and liquidate them. Countries just cannot allow fanatical elements to fight for separation and independendence, unless one wants to see thousands of economically unfeasible states that are volatile and politically unstable.

A sovereign state should not speak to terrorists, but only to law abiding citizens. A sovereign state should use the full strength of its armed forces and other state machinery for fighting the menace of terrorism. I wonder what is there to speak to these terrorists other than telling them in clear terms to surrender, face jail terms and be rehabilitated.
