by Sameer on Jan 02, 2006 09:02 AM  Permalink

India have done right thing it is always better to go with US instead of Jihadi nation. Would Iran ever supported India on the issue of Kashmir, he always supported Pakistan.
We can have other sources and alternatives to natural gas.

STRATEGIC RELATIONS
by Hanif Mohammed on Jan 01, 2006 04:03 PM  Permalink

Most of the comments, are emotional rather than strategic. The author did not mix his views or play his emotions, but it was pretty straight forward, benefiting INDIA. Do not fall in love with US, because you never know when they turn their backs, and their international relations, are very much strictly STRATEGIC - look how they are hanging on to Saudis. If given their wish, they would wipe them off the map. The Author emphasized, that our relationship, have to be more strategically balanced than to love any other nation. We should love only ourselves, and therefore only look after our interest - like what US does. They do not give a damn, if rest of the world is burning, for their survival. Gents, do not get carried away with emotional issues, because that will not take our country to where we wish to see ourselves. Best example is China, because they look after themselves quite well, and the progress is there to be witnessed, by the world. We should start to love ourselves, and to an extent be selfish as well !!

i agree
by anon_h on Dec 30, 2005 08:27 PM  Permalink

i agree wth some of the comments on this page. Iran is not a country we can depend on in the long run..what with the change of power as well as proximity to Pak being an OIC member as well. most prob its a failed state in the long run with the threat of an impending US attack .
Of course , given the credibility of the author , one has to agree with most of the facts b4 us but still the alliance with the US will prove to be a lot more beneficial, not just from the energy standpoint but from the tech , political and defence aspects as well.

What after 2020? Nuclear energy is the answer. US is the answer. Going by the way Iran is modelling itself in the talib fashion, they may use their Indian contacts to destroy the world. Besides, too many muslims in India would mean security concerns. Antagonising our relations with Americans can have many ill-effects.

Nuclear energy is not the answer ! It can't support our energy demands. What it generates is going to be so meagre... And it is highly insecure, not good for environment etc. Too many ill effects for something that is not going to help us.

What sucks most about India is Indians themselves. National Interest at stake? I mean, what sort of statement is that? This deep rooted slave mentality refuses to leave our heads because we are bound by our 'elders' the half baked idiots of our country who havent had an ounce of aggression in their souls and wish that we are capable of being a 'superpower'. Rubbish!... Iran would provide oil therefore we should suck up to people who have neither the will nor the courage to blend with the world in anyway shape or form. US is the country wiht the technology and people like Makhajani cant see beyond his Nehruvian ideolgy where US is the "capitalistic aggressor' and they will eat us alive ..OOOOOO...such a scary scenario...Will someone remind him of the Persian invasions into our land? Its history..those who do not learn it are condemed..oh wait a minute ..but we are!
I wish the rivers would flood and flush it all away. Three words that have destroyed our minds Tradition, Culture and Heritage. Cowards. All of us. That would include you lot at rediff as well...censoring all the letters that deviate, you self appointed guardians of journalism.

India's vote rightly cast
by E Ramaswamy on Dec 29, 2005 01:47 PM  Permalink

Even if the vote against Iran was under US pressure it seems to have been rightly cast , considering Iran's statements on Israel. Iran will always support any terrorist act if it is done in the name of the magic word 'Jihad'. Any enemy of Israel is likely to be an enemy of India too.

Interview Dr. Arjun Makhijani was very enlightning
by Ananda Kumar on Dec 29, 2005 01:30 PM  Permalink

Reading interview with Dr. Arjun Makhijani was very enlightening. When you read it, he comes out as very opinioned. However he backs his views with more information that supports it. After reading the interview, I agree that India really needs to take a long-term strategic view on their power infrastructure and show the way to the rest of the world.

He was very forthcoming about US hypocrisy. US is using its civilian nuclear facility for military purposes and dont allow IAEA inspections. India should not be sucked into giving up its NAM status and loose its face and leadership voicing equal and fair treatment. It cannot tip toe to the demands of US that US does not follow and adhere to its own standard.

India has great potential to grow and succeed into a global economic power without loosing its non-aligned status. For that it has to achieve its success with its independent thinking, strong leadership, and bright people of this country. Any success it might achieve by kissing up to big powers cannot be a role model for other countries.

Hope some of the people in power come across this kind of valuable information.

Are you kidding?
by Vijay on Dec 29, 2005 12:48 PM  Permalink

Honestly, I did not go thru the entire article but to say that we should choose Iran over US or for that matter any other country is plain ridiculous. The current regime is extremist and they are busy broadcasting outrageous statements that are being condemned throughout the world. By aligning ourselves to a country like Iran would be nothing less than foolish. We do not need another country with extreme views and nuclear weapons to turn against us some day.
