While Conducting and reporting interviews it will be nice if genuine care is taken to report factually. The reporter has goofed up in the expanson of CIRUS : "It is believed that CIRUS [Canada-India-Research United States, from which the weapons grade plutonium for India's first nuclear tests i 1974 is said to have come]"... CIRUS stands for "Canada India Reactor for Utility Services" and not the crap given above.
"Some diplomats privately argue why do Indian scientists not accept that they have collectively failed to deliver cheap and efficient nuclear energy on time?"
Any country in the world, with no single exception, had it been subjected to denials of the kind India has faced over the years in developing civil nuclear technology, would have failed.
excellent article, such relevent subjects should be taken up for discussion, build up popular opinion instead of blinkered focus on 2 stupid subjects all the media concentrates Politics & Bollywood. Let us show the world that we Indians are as intelligent within India as the world over.
An informative article on a very topical subject about which most Indians, even educated ones are not aware. Thru the agreement the US no doubt wants to bring our weapon making capability under their sight if not under their control. Without implimentation of the terms, we can not expect to get the fuel or uranium for our civilian reactors. Dr. Prasad has correctly pointed out that we have missed several opportunities to build stock of this critical material either thru manufacture or thru acquiring from outside i.e.reprocessed but enriched fuel from USSR. Separation of the facilities for accountability purpose is not very difficult, once intentions and objectives are understood. This has already been done at NFC Hyderabad where fuel for Tarapur is made. One should also note that US allowed Pakistan to acquire bomb making capability right under its nose. Why?
This is a forthright commnet of a learned and accomplished scientist. Common citizens are incapable of commenting on it.
NEvertheless, I feel that the whole program of separating civil and newclear facilities is aimed at giving right focuss to both areas, ensuring safety and maintaining secrecy in the interest of the national security. We are not planning to do anything that will violate the interests of the international community. Whey then should we be subjected to permission from the self appointed protectors of the world!
