Indo-US Nuclear Deal: What's good for India?
by M. Shankar on Dec 18, 2006 12:54 PM  Permalink

It is clear that two issues are critical - US helping India to meet the power needs, and in the process wanting to ensure that Indians don't run wild producing nuclear weapon after weapon. The US focus perhaps rests mainly on the latter part and they would want to ensure that enough safeguards are in place. But what worries is (i) what happens if any of our neighbours suddenly decide India needs to be subdued through arms-might, (ii) God forbid, for some very unfortunate reason now we can't even fathom, US decides India needs to be 'punished' with its own awesome might, (iii) should many other countries which now boast of nuke capability should continue to do what they want to as being debated now (eg North Korea, Iran etc), and (iv) isn't India's position that Nuclear Proliferation Ban should be a "global" and not isolated concern reasonable to pursue through UN or such bodies. While it is a fantastic thing that India is being considered for US cooperation in meeting its energy needs, may be the Trust should be extended far more. India has proved itself to be a very responsible nation, even with its considerable capability. Give it a good try.

M. Shankar.

USA can not be trusted
by rajaram on Aug 01, 2006 10:55 PM  Permalink

History shows that USA and its allies including Canada can not be trusted when they enter into any agreement. They are so cunning that before entering into agreemwnts they have already thought of the excuses and time to walk out of agreements. Afterwards they conveniently forget that they are the first ones to break it and start shouting like a fox of Esops tales.
