Are Indian Lawmakers getting underpaid.
by Balakrishnan.S on Dec 15, 2005 08:55 AM  Permalink

The subject matter would need to get commented from various angles.Criteria for any compensation package are Quality,Performance, Credibility & a host of other factors..Because of weak Norms for Nomination any person without regard to academic Background can get elected as MP or ,MLA.Even Crminal Background tends to get overlooked. How can such people claim to become Law Makers to decide the destiny of the country. Can we call ourselves healthy Democracy on the same footing as USA or UK where Law Makers have Excellent Background worth the position. If this be so why should an Indian MP get heavily paid for not doing any thing to the country. One can not compare with a CEO either.Overall MPs'Performance & ability do not deserve any major compensation at the cost of Exchequer. They should desist from deciding their Remuneration system.Let there be an Independent Body to work out Salary for MPs on an Objective basis with a system to review the contribution made by the MP during his tenure as MP.If Performance Appraisal is yardstick in every other Sector why leave out MPs from the Same. They are not Gods to get away with any thing while thousands of others are struggling to earn their living despite having very good Background. The time has come to evolve quality criterion for eligibility to get Nominated for RajyaSabha or election to Lok Sabha.Similar Criteria should also be evolved for eligibility to judge as to who should represent a constituency to really work for the Developement of the Constituency.Once such a system comes in,No one will ever be against giving good salary package to Members of Parliament or Legislatures.Until then ,the so called Member does not deserve to call himself a Law maker for how anybody can make a Law for the Country if he does not know what is good & bad or if he is one with a Criminal TrackRecord. It will an Irony if The Law Breakers are Going to be The Law Makers for Our Country. One would shudder to think of such a Contingency emanating. This is where The Election Commission should play an effective Role being objectively backed up by Parliament.Only then we can also proudly proclaim ourselves to be A Top Class Democracy.

MP's salary
by kiran bathini on Dec 14, 2005 11:29 PM  Permalink

the amount MPs recieve as salary may seem less but as shown in this article their every need is being taken care of, including medical expences.the salary is a top up amount.

this may sound strange statement in Indian politics but they are there to serve people not themselves.

anyway we are part of such a system that the house keys are in the hands of robbers.we can't help it but to pray for the mercy of the robbers.

MP's status--its mind boggling!!!!!!
by Sukhbir Singh on Dec 14, 2005 11:16 PM  Permalink

In colonial time our freedom fighters complained about the economy which was being driven out by britishers to England. But todays perspective is that the MP's choosen by 'our people', eat money of 'our people' and then they make things worst for 'our people'. Greatest irony for Indians is that we choose ourself for the one who will eat us!!!. what a pity that we have to heat the palms of our MP's to just raise a question of his/her constituency in parliament. Shame!!! If the so called MP's start spending the money made for their 'privilege' for the well being of their people then i dont think that our nation can have any 'Poor class' within a year.they spend so lavishly on their lifestyle that they are themselves the burden on our economy. Then what is left for the common people? Just see this never ending game and curse for the situation? what a great country!
we should awake now otherwise that day is not so much far when we will be in shackles of slavery once again. and, ironocally, due to 'our people'. At least we should have logical temperament to choose a person based on his/her qualities, abilities, commitments, vision, honesty and self-dignity.

How much does an MP earn?
by anamika on Dec 14, 2005 03:36 PM  Permalink

if one takes in to consideration the amount of pending bills for each ministry for calls, electricity etc..... these MPs dont deserve half of the perks they get...they are simply there to loot people's hard earned money

MP Earning
by Ashvin Oza on Dec 14, 2005 12:03 PM  Permalink

For the level of work the MP do for the Country and their State I think that they are getting JUST Salary. Their Perks make up more than enough for Salary - I thought that they are in Politics for the betterment of Citizens, State and Country, let them prove that they are doing justice to this country's growth then as a Citizen we shall see if they deserve any increase.

No Work - No Pay
Work - Get Paid

You mentioned that they are paid less than certain professions, to be honest they are not Qualified for any jobs (No Education-Level) thus they do the next best thing to do - BE IN POLITICS

MP's salary
by Mohan on Dec 14, 2005 11:40 AM  Permalink

The money recieved by MPs is simply exhaxerated. One has to see how much he actually gets legally as renumerations which definitely is paltry as compared to other professonals. Mohan

MPLAD is not MP's earning
by Anoop on Dec 14, 2005 10:53 AM  Permalink

The MPLAD - Members of Parliament Local Area Development - Fund has been shown here under the allowance of the MP. This is gross misrepresentation of fact. The MP can only indicate the works which can be undertalkn using this fund.
