What's in a name? But if Bombay could become Mumbai, Madras could become Chennai and Calcutta- Kolkata, why not Bangalore be called by its real name, BenagaLuru?

the real name is Bende KaLe ooru So if it all it is renamed that should be the new name I think u would agree.
Totally agree kannada should be given classical language status... but it would not be a good idea to rename Bangalore. Bangalore has attained a brandname now...dont waste the money renaming, but it should better used to improve the infrastructure of city. And for year's most of us who have grown up knowing the city we love as it is known.... Changing names of roads and cities is a big loss to history itself.
Bangalore today is the IT capital of the world. I am here at NYC, ppl here know Bangalore as the silicon valley of india. The word Bangalore is not mere name for a city but a pride of every indian - every kannada speaking guy. The name is a brand name for india and india inc. So instead of renaming the city name ( which has taken years of hardwork by many software engineers and companies ) why dont they improve city's infrastructure and expand the city - put politician time ,money and effort to atleast some usefullness which would benefit every one in the state. I dont understand what is the need for changing the name of a city that symbolises India's power as a IT GIANT.
I think of all these name changes as a big joke...this is a result of our suffering from slave mentality...if the local people call these cities in their local language...so be it but changing names officially according to the local dialect specially of these internationally known cities is plain BS. Not only does it cause confusion among the international community but also among our own people...Mumbai will always be known as Bombay and bengaluru or whatever will always be known as Bangalore....so all these are political gimmicks ...STOP this nonsense and concentrate on infrastructure development not name changes...
The name change doesn't make any sense. Bangalore is the name people associate with the city. Aren't there far more pressing problems to be addressed in Bangalore. It would be much better if the state government would focus on infrastructure development, unemployment, education, security, etc. I am sick of Indian politicians going on and on about culture and tradition. When basic human necessities like food, shelter and employment are not being met, culture and tradition become last priority.
At least congress ruled state is doing something right besides bashing Infosys chief. I hope this is just the beginning and should be done all over the countery where the names of cities were changed for the covenience of british scums. Also your reporters need to start using the correct changed names for cities. e.g. It is not Baroda anymore it is Vadodara similarly it is not Benara but is Varanasi. There are many examples where this needs to be done.
In my opinion the Govt should stop wasting time renaming cities and actually focus on more important issues such as infrastructure, electricity, roads etc which just seem to be getting worse by the day!!!
