I am for renaming India to Bharat. It is just a subtle act of regaining a lost identity. The text books at school refer to the river ganga as GANGES. Ganges is the word coined by the britishers because they could not pronounce ganga right.
They can name any city anyway they like. But If they do not keep it clean and beautiful it is nothing but a garbage can. My visits to Bangalore always reminds me of this. India is a one big garbage can.
It's been 58 years after the British left India that we have realised the importance of the place and its name. Bengaluru it is and Bengaluru it should be. The British couldn't pronounce it correctly and they called it Bangalore. So what? Let them & everyone learn how to do it hereafter.
They are renaming the cities according to the pronunciation habits of local citizens without caring about the other world which is quite large. Just imagine an U.S. manager/employee saying Bangalaru.

Dear sandeep just imagine US manager calling ur name as sandeep , if he can do that he also can do the same to our bengaluru.
Bengalooru sounds much more sweeter and homlier than the pointless Bangalore! Though some narrow minded North Indians may call it regionalism, I think it is a good move. We are appreciating the westerners enough by trying to ape them in a lot of wrong ways anyway.
You know whats stupid about Bengaluru it should be Bende kaLe uru in the first place and even that is a sily name ... It is just a place where Kempe Gowda was offered boiled beans by an old woman or some story like that . There is far more justification for Mumbai Kolkata and Channai ...
Kolkata is derived from - KaliKata - Kali Ghat from the Kali Temple Mumbai is derived from Mumba Devi temple
Chennai is derived from Chenna Keshava Temple and Chenna Malleshwara temple and it name therefore became Chenna patnam.
If Mysore is called Mahisana ooru it is fine .
Its foolish to rename to something which is a frivolous name given by a local chieftain to an insignificant village . The british did good by renaming it and Dharam Singh who can't do anything good is doing what he best can ... renaming a great city. He should probably build the Airport and flyovers before this ... Being a Banglorean for all my life I feel a strong sense of dismay at where all this i s going to lead to.....
The identity of Bangalore IS BengaLuru. It was distorted into Bangalore. We are reclaiming it,in keeping with the trend. I reiterate: I agree - What's in a name? But if Bombay could become Mumbai, Madras could become Chennai and Calcutta- Kolkata, why not Bangalore be called by its real name, BengaLuru? Here is what I would ask those who responded: how would the majority of you feel if your names were anglicised permanently? (Exceptions: some NRIs adopting their anglicised names!)
Finally, atleast some good news! "Better late than never" is the perfect sentence for this action from Karnataka government. This should have been done long ago. Atleast right after the Madras -> Chennai name change. Anyway, at last it has happened now. Lets all welcome this proper name of the garden city. My thanks to Karnataka Chief Minister and the governement. Eagerly waiting for the official announcement on 'bengaLooru'!!
