What use is the Plutonium incinerator cycle when India has extremely limited production of Plutonium, and is short of it for weapons making, in which it is about fifty times weaker than its sworn, deadly, and aggressively active enemies Pakistan and China ?

There are many countries in ex-soviet states with stock piles of nuclear materials, de-comissioned weapons, that are poorly guarded and getting stolen and sold for profit by opportunists or ex-employees for pittance so they can survive. America and European countries are paying their tax-payers money to secure these materials from pilferage and even shipping them back to USA or Europe for secure storage. There is no immediate profitable use for these materials as America also has a surplus of them due to de-comissioning of their nuclear weapons under the SALT treaties.
These materials can be sold to India, under the proper safeguard of IAEA and NPT, as it is intended for peaceful uses and not for military application.
The ATBR will solve India's energy needs for long time to come. We shd consider whether it is worth going in for Iran-India pipe line with Pak obduracy.Also whether to be party to a pact with US which virtually closes our nuclear options once and for all.
your last line is hilarious...which friendly country will give up its plutonium? are you serious when you write this sentence or is this a joke?>...go get the inside view of what kind of organization BARC is...absolute shambles...poor homi bhaba is stirring in his grave!..politics, corruption, mismanagement, groupism..it was not how it was in its glory days!...its poor shadow of itself now with all the good scientists retired and gone!..very very sad..all this just good for presentations and conferences ...the electricity generated is not enough to power a light blub and the hot water is dumped right into the sea..
BARC has done its job splendidly!! kudos!! but it is now up to the govt to put the reactor to practical use and take care of the power problems. from just reading the article, this seems to THE solution - considering that we wont need to import uranium for this. ...and once again... 3 cheers to BARC!! way to go!!
Congratulations to the scientists at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) on their achievements with the Thorium Breeder Reactor. The presentation of the Paper on ATBR by the BARC scientists comes closely on the heels of the Indo-US Nuclear Agreement, which would further the use of uranium based reactors.
Given the advantages of the TBR for India with very little Uranium resources but plenty of Thorium, the Indian Government will be compelled to inject more money into the accelerated development of a commercial TBR. Such a positive step will be a reaffirmation of the nations confidence in its scientists and technologists, and also be a huge encouragement to them in their quest for refinements and newer products.
These cells are modular designs using radioactive balls instead of rods. This reactor can never reach the critical/blast point. It is very portable and can be put where the need is ==> no 20% transmission loss.

hope this reactor will solve some of India's power shortage problems. we are certainly proud of our scientists who invent some thing that can translate into a national benifit.
