I have noted the critical comments on my article on Prof. Jagdish Bhagwati. The purpose of the article was to pay a tribute to one of the world's most outstanding economists on his seventieth birthday.I did not even attempt to evaluate his contribution.
As to the references to one family, each one of them was to highlight his modesty and generosity.
The column, Encounters, is meant to bring to the readers rare glimpses of the personalities of the celebrities whom the author has met over the years.
Perhaps, this is also a type of corruption to publish something irrelevant, just to oblige, satisfy and please some one, may be, in expectation of a return in some way or other, leaving readers to guess the purpose of its publication! This can happen in India very easily as merits don't find its due place on account of such corrupt practices in print media too! As we are not new to corruption that has penetrated deep into our marrow, perhaps, we have no alternative but to accept and digest silently! We, a large number of Indians, being extremely tolerant, do shine as carriers of our rich tradition of tolerance!
I don't know the purpose of this article. Except that the author wants to introduce his whole family and their acheivements. No purpose in such articles. Please stop publishing such articles on rediff.
