Is modern meteorology maligned in India?
by B.Gautam on Aug 19, 2005 01:28 AM  Permalink

Certainly, it is a thorough failure of meteorological department that led to huge losses of life and property in case of tsunami! Seismographs in all observatories world over recorded an earth quake near Indonesia in the depths of Indian Ocean, measuring 8.9 to 9.00 on Ritcher scale sharp at 6-29 A.M., on that fateful Sunday, the 26th December, 2004!
How then the massive quake was not recorded at 06-29 A.M. in Indian observatories remains a mystery! If recorded, a meteorologist would be aware of every possibility of tsunami hitting our coasts even in absence of a tsunami warning system, due to a simple scientific fact that the tremendous energy released into ocean waters had to be dissipated in all directions to transfer them to all our coasts by tsunami waves!
Why then Nation was not alerted immediately as we had about three long hours at our disposal, remains another mystery!
Perhaps, an experienced scientific mind could predict a cloud burst too in advance from satellite pictures. Why was it not forecast in advance is also a mystery!
There is something drastically wrong with functioning of meteorological dept. of India which takes heavy toll of valued lives and properties! Instead of covering up on basis of non-availabilities, Govt. should ensure that whatever could be done with those available are done to the best. Will Govt. take action against such serious errors?

Can't spell 'Doppler' ? Pathetic news reporting quality
by SC on Aug 14, 2005 12:08 PM  Permalink

The quality of news reporting and editing of this article is way below the standard of what I expect from Rediff.

At least fix your basic spelling and grammar.

From a concerned reader.
