The deluge of Mumbai
by Balaji K on Aug 11, 2005 06:54 PM  Permalink

The recent rains in Mumbai were an eye-opener. One hopes that the whole concept of city planning takes lessons from the series of disastrous mistakes and the total lack of developmental vision which brought Mumbai to its knees. It isn't just Mumbai, any major city of India is basically a disaster waiting to happen. Indians as people have a NIMBY attitude. They would keep their house neat but would not lift a finger to keep the area around their home clean. It is time Indians developed a civic sense, something which was taught to us cursorily years ago at school. As long as we don't have civic sense, a sense of community and a feeling of social responsibility, India will never become a developed nation. Every developed nation has got where it has because the people had a sense of responsibility. Not just Mumbai, every Indian needs to wake up and demand accountability and deliver it. That will be our first step to becoming a great nation again.

If You want to save Mumbai- follow 5 points

1. Stop further constrcution in city on green land.whether commercial or Residential..Only existing structures should be renovated.

2. Stop Entry of Heavy Vehicles in BMC limits from 8 Am to 10 PM

3. Stop use of cars by Bureacrates/ Politicians and make them travel in Locals ..

4. Raise Entry Tax/ Road Tax on vehicles to such a level that only few people can drive own vehicles.

5. Make Separate path for BEST buses/ Autos/ Taxis with share - auto/taxi stands at convenient locations..

an error
by tormentor on Aug 06, 2005 11:53 PM  Permalink

i wud like to point out an error of shenoy's. south mumbai didnt see the same kind of devastation as the suburbs because there was simply no rainfall over there. south mumbai with its unique strip-like landscape received about 78mm of rains while the suburbs received about 930mm. let us not give any credit to the british where its not due!

offer mumbaikars a chance
by Dr.Rashmi on Aug 06, 2005 09:25 AM  Permalink

Bravo to the author. though he does not live in mumbai, he has come up with with a very accurate view of the situation in mumbai. .. and i believe instead of making mumbai a state, the best option would be to shift the capital of Maharashtra to some less crowded city, well connected by rail and road. That way, the poor city will see some development. Also the aam janta from other parts of the state would not have to put up with the crowds of mumbai, and vice versa.

i congratulate the author again on a well written article. thanks.

Cut the nonsense & offer Mumbai a chance
by Amit Apte on Aug 05, 2005 01:10 PM  Permalink

You said about allowing Mumbai to have their own goverment. You said that Mayor and Sherrif has no hold. I agree...but why are you conveniently forgetting what Delhi has or Delhi had done? Mumbai gives lots of money and does not get back anything...Is not Delhi responsible for it? Delhi which does not need any Metro rail has got metro rail but Mumbai which wanted metro rail always asked but never got that...Is this not non-sense done by central government to Mumbai...so why just blame state government and mayor...of course they are not doing their job but do not blame them alone....Delhi has been more responsible for Mumbai's downfall...they have always looked Mumbai as thing to exploit and done it....so you feel Delhi better than Mumbai then enjoy nobody is asking you to come to Mumbai to live your life....see the conditions of normal Mumbai people and the pain faced by them...Those Bangladeshi's come to Mumbai and get 24 hours water and normal Mumbai people are deprived of basic infrastructure..Thousands of people from all over India coming and exploiting Mumbai....should these people not be stopped....so before comparing Mumbai with Delhi give answers to these questions...
