Why Play a blame Game???
by Adityash on Aug 03, 2005 03:11 PM  Permalink

In the Message Board where some of the big brains have blamed the Mumbaities for the flooding the Mumbai, acutally are not aware of the real facts. They say stop blaming rains, "blame the Mumbaities" "Wise Up Mumbaities" "God bless Mumbaikars" "Mumbai is by far the dirtiest city in India, and dare I say, the world" etc etc. Think who are responsible, no one of the Mumbaities is responsible, it happened it was going to happened, No warnings was given Why? Dont we have any equipments for the same to find out such disasters. Ok It happened the British build the city but mind it they did it for themselves but we developed it. Only views like this come when Mumbai goes through this distress starts blaming everyone except themselves. Tell me where were those people are, when those people in most affected areas are still staying in dark waiting for the help.People who are trying to blame the plastic bags users must look out for there tiffin box in their bag which are wrapped in plastic bags. Sitting in Dubai/Kuwait getting an SMS preaching the Indians is very simple than coming here & be a part of suffering.

make bombay autonomous
by Vikram Naik on Aug 03, 2005 03:05 PM  Permalink

Over the last few days, everyone has realised how badly Mumbai coped with the rains and why this has happened. The most beneficial act would be to make this city autonomous with a government of its own which can be held accountable and which can also stake its claim (for a city that donates so much to the central government it hardly gets back what it deserves). Secondly there needs to be some kind of restriction on the amount of migrant population coming to Mumbai; the city is bursting at its seams and till provisions are made to contain whatever population it already has, entry into the city needs to be restricted.

There is a lot of talk about slum dwellers and removing slums. Sure they are a sore sight to our eyes but the city runs on a workforce that does not necessarily live in apartments. The city needs those labourers, those servants, those sweepers. And why should we restrict entry of people just because they are poor. Restrict even the educated or the rich.

And we need to give special attention to that forgotten profession of town planning. Bombay is an architectural nightmare and it is worth looking and learning from the British who built the best parts of the city

The lessons learnt would be ''short-lived''
by Sawal Das Jethani on Aug 03, 2005 03:03 PM  Permalink

No doubt about the fact that the "machinery" in Mumbai failed completely, BMC being the prime culprit. But we are also to be blamed for the same.

Instead of selecting corporators & politicians on basis of merit & what good they can do to the society, we select them on "party" or "caste/religion", worst on celebrity status (recent example of Govinda who displayed his ignorance on basic things like PIL etc).

It would be still foolish to think that any of the departments would change for better themselves. To make any difference to the city, we have to strongly support people like Mahesh Bhatt & Koel Puri who are planning to file a PIL against the Government, in spite of no harm happening to them.

My worry is not what has happened, my worry is that like so many crimes of various politicians & celebrities have been forgotten in the past, this issue would also be forgotten in a few days time & our children might face a bigger disaster.

People of Mumbai have gone through tears & sweat,

In a month all this Mumbaikars would forget,

His seat again the respected politician will get,

In a few years again we would cry & sweat!

Take care..... we are rich... preserve our richness
by SARDA MOHAN on Aug 03, 2005 02:38 PM  Permalink

i totally agree that we are the cause of our problems. Man has been playing with nature as he pleases, so will nature remain quiet for long. When nature strikes back, it must now be clear how severe it is.... after seeing all the earthquakes, tsunamis and now this world record rain.

The dream of making cities Shanghai, Tokyo, etc... would become true only when we are responsible enough and first remember... DO NOT LITTER.

Well, our teachers have not failed to teach us "BIts of paper, lying on the floor, make the place untidy, pick it up..."

Only that we have'nt put it to practice. We must remember it everytime in all that we do, just like we are worried about our food, clothing, shelter and of course, money.

So take care..... of yourself and your environment....

Mumbai, wake up !
by ValsaKo on Aug 03, 2005 02:36 PM  Permalink

This is no time for blame-games.We need to take stock of ourselves and get real.Natarajan's letter among others make me cry. We now need to strike fire in our hearts and stoke the flames of unity and togetherness.
This is the time for unity and for plannning a new city for the next century. Too long have we allowed the politicians to loot the family silver and state governments in power to cart away the reserves earned by the toil, the tears and the sweat of previous generations who believed in good governance and integrity.
The business community have also been party to the rape of these seven islands bequeathed by the Portuguese in dowry to the English who, raised a city to the architectural splendour of London.
The seeds of bitter dissent and exploitation sowed during the last 58 years have reaped a self-destruct whirlwind. Minorities like Parsis and Anglo-Indians have migrated. While the city abounds in slums and more slums, all electoral breeding-grounds for expedient political parties and
by MumbaDevi, haven't they done well ?
Bollywood,ShivSainiks,apathy.. are only the tip of the iceberg which has crashed into this titanic-hearted city which will rise again. Jai Mumbai

People turn virtuous.
by Raj Narayanan on Aug 03, 2005 02:21 PM  Permalink

Blame none. Read scriptures. Become virtuous. If each individual becomes virtuous and good thinking. Everything will be good and earth will be heaven. Mere material advancement, ultimately leads us to the pit we all dig together. Lack of honesty, virtues in all of us is the root cause of all miseries. Awake people...
